The legalistas aren't said to be happy with the efforts of Jim O'Callaghan trying to slow down their gravy train.

"New legal aid rules are due to come into effect on July 1, with solicitors planning to go on strike for the rest of the week in protest at changes including the proposed 'one accused, one fee' system

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan is attempting to "clamp down" on what he describes as "abuse" of the free legal aid system as solicitors launch strike action over proposed changes.

It comes as a report revealed that 63 legal aid certificates were issued for a single defendant accused of brothel keeping, generating up to €14,000 in fees for one court appearance. "



And in fairness to Minister Jim O'Callaghan he knows of what he speaks with regard to the legalistas - he's a barrister himself. He was called to the Bar in 1993, and became a Senior Counsel in 2008.

The dogs on the road know that the whole free-legal-aid system is being abused and even one of their own is very publicly admitting it and trying to do something about it.

€14,000 for ONE court appearance - nice work if you can get it. Oh but let's blame the Gardai for not bringing it to the judge's attention

To be fair, I never said that.

What I said was that it is far from the most lucrative stream of work available to Solicitors, which is why the vast majority of them don't do it.

Also, the painting of that case as "14k for one court appearance" is quite disingenuous, in that it completely disregards the 6 to 12 months of preparatory work that goes into preparing for a criminal trial.

I have long stated that I don't think the current legal aid system works and that we should have a public defenders office instead. Though those who like to engage in Solicitor bashing on here conveniently forget this all of the time.

It really is beyond your comprehension that I could know or be friendly with members of the Gardai isn't it.

The only one bullshitting on whether or not I know Gardai and am friendly with some of them is by you. Hell, I even know a couple of people who've been prominent members of the Legal profession in this city, one of whom I meet on occasion for a chat and a coffee. But, don't let the facts interfere with your narrative eh
