The official NATIONAL court report thread

Once again, I have said many many times that our current legal aid system is not fit for purposes and it should be scrapped and replaced with a public defender system. You keep ignoring this, because you want to pretend that I am defending the current system but I am not.

You seem to also have ignored my questioning as to why a barrister would make a false claim for an interpreter, or why a firm would have an interpreter on retainer?

What aid do you think people are getting that they shouldn't be under the current legal aid system that you now tell us is "not fit for purpose"

Are you now seriously trying to tell us that barristers never make false claims to the court? Jeez Louise

I have already set this out in detail.

You have made the claim. You are unable to back it up because it is nonsense. Once again, why would a barrister make a false claim for an interpreter? Why would a solicitor have an interpreter on retainer?

The legal team are making claims for their client under a system that you now admit is not fit for purpose, and the Minister says is being abused. If you don't think false claims are being made then I'm afraid that's on you.

Meanwhile, I think I'll have to step back a bit from this because I don't want to be seen as contravening something and meriting a trip to banhalla courtesy of (not-)Admin just when we're coming up to seeing whether or not my claims on another thread that you said are bullshit actually come to pass. 😇

Why do you do that stupid thing where you say " you now admit" as if I have changed my view?

You do it all the time, and not just to me.

It is extremely disingenuous, and intellectually dishonest

why do you persist in doing it?

Ie, I'm losing this argument so I'm going to pretend that I'm at risk of banning.

All you've been in this thread is idiotic, and if that was a banning offence you'd never get to post here.

For the record, despite your faux offence, I never said that your claim in relation to TOM was bullshit. Why are you lying about that?

Some chancers!

However, he said spending on free legal aid increased from €19m in 2015 to nearly €40m in 2025. This, he argued, is despite the number of criminal cases in the district court declining.

Nice work if you can get it.

But if the authorities dare talk of even slowing down the legal gravy train it’s “How very dare they - we should go on strike”

Legal Costs in this country, called out even by the Troika (remember them) are why most of us, not the legal profession obvs,”can’t have nice things”

Ireland is more litigious now (because there’s money to be made in court) and with the huge legal costs, insurance costs are through the roof as a result. And then many businesses and/or events can’t go ahead because of “Health and Safety”
Not so much that it’s any more dangerous than previous undertakings, just that the insurance needed to cover it and pay for the legal cases has skyrocketed. 😔

It's fairly blatant greed alright.
If they don't like the legal aid criteria, don't do it. Let the market sort out who does it, no?
Rather , than hold the country ransom to get their way. Some of them obviously see state coffers as their pay source.

That details of that doneraile murder trial are not for the faint hearted. While the killer will hopefully get put away, the victim wasn't the angel portrayed it seems. Punching a woman and knocking out her teeth is a fair scummy thing to do . I guess he was so drunk he didn't think of the consequences
