He's literally the highest scorer of the PL era & clearly one of the best attacking players of the last 30+ years.

"Inspire" is a meaningful phrase in this context Lee. There are outstanding performers on teams who come up short just like there are some bang average performers in teams who win titles.

In the 4 seasons before he second major injury he averaged 30 PL goals per season. That his teams for those season only managed 1 title in that period is not down to lack of "inspiration" from their main striker. He did all that could be expected of him, and more.

In very few of those seasons did he have the best squad in the league around him.

Went to clubs for the money, his personal glory and not titles.

Therein lies the gripe that many SMCs have against Shearer. He turned them down twice.

You shouldn't let that get in the way of assessing a guy who put in a truly elite body of work in the PL era, despire two very serious injuries in his early/mid 20s.

The level of esteem that he's held in for his club career has very little to do with his nationality Lee.
