The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

Hughes more likely, but yeah...I doubt the first time there was any meaningful contact was this week.

But it really doesn't seem like a definitive call was made on Slot prior to the final game.

At the very least you'd think they got word to Iraola back in April that if he was interested in the Liverpool job he shouldn't go too far down the road elsewhere without checking in.
Sorry yes Hughes. What makes me think that way is Iraola had already told Bournemouth he was not going to sign a new contract. I guess the two year thing will raise its head again 😉

And the other thought is they didn't jump at Alonso when he was the more obvious candidate.

Liverpool haven’t signed a specialist DM since Fabinho 2018.

They obviously recognise the importance of one cos they’ve tried for Tchoumeini, Caceido, Lavia etc but, bar Endo as a stop gap, have struck out.

Gravenberch worked fine there for 7/8 months in 24/25 but he’s not naturally defensive.

They badly need a monster in there. The back line was brutally exposed last season with zero shape in midfield.

To get the best out of soboszlai and gravenberch they need to play as 8s imo
I agree they’re both 8’s. Gravenberch was superb as a DM for Slot two seasons ago but his best work was done with the ball played into him and he used open up the pitch with a brilliant half turn. Teams clocked onto that and he became much less effective in that role. When the team couldn’t press last season he showed up his lack of defensive instincts and willingness to do the dirty side of the game.

We need to sign two mids this summer and sell MacAllister in an ideal world and one of them has to be natural DM with physical presence and athleticism. The other mid needs to also be very athletic. I’ve seen rumours of Wharton and while he’s a very good player on the ball and would probably invoke Wirtz a lot more in good positions, he wouldn’t solve defensive issues because he’s not the most mobile.

If Wirtz is the answer then I don’t know the question!
I’m looking forward to Bradley supplying the ammunition for Isak to bang in the goals next season.
New players needed and another thing I’m looking forward to is the new manager getting the team playing at a high tempo.
Lots to look forward to.

Alonso wanted more control.

He's already explained the 2 year contract as well. No problems with that.
