The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

This season has been clearly worse. Today's games bearing that out once more. Woeful shite, what I saw of it.
Era they've both been horrendously shite. It's like arguing over which dogshit smells worse, so we'll leave it there. (I must point out that as usual I was right and ahead of the curve though, so there is that).

Also, when you see the football being played by the likes of PSG, Bayern, Real and Barca and then go back to watching the premiershit, they're miles behind them.

So many mistakes on and off the pitch have contributed to this shambles(the one uncontrollable was the death of Jota, everything else is on the staff and players). A huge mistake was giving Salah two more years on a huge salary which then meant not acceding to Diaz's deserved wage demands. There also seems to be a lack of good coaching. Under Klopp's coaching team players like Fabinho, Trent, Diaz, Szobo and others were coached into becoming much better players especially in their first few months at the club-some didnt even play any matches. One aspect I hear mentioned a lot is lack of intensity. If you look at the players who are gone from last season Jota, Diaz and Nunez were all very high energy players(replaced by Etikike, Gapko & Isak). Bradley another big loss on the energy front. Trent for different reasons. MacAllister getting some abuse but he has never been a high energy player.
All fair points there Don-y.

Add Kerkez to that too. Plenty of energy, ignored by Gakpo and often told to hold back.

Frimpong likewise. Different player at RW than RB

Hard to disagree with any of that as it's very factual and a pretty balanced view.

There were plenty of challenging factors not of Slot's making, but he also didn't help himself with aspects of his decision-making.

A few of these points have been raised periodically on this thread

- Core group of players playing far too many minutes (a number of which have NEVER played so many minutes in a season)
- False depth in the squad due to Slot's reluctance to play squad meat (Endo, Chiesa) or overburden youngsters (Rio, Nyoni)
- Reluctance to make subs early (prior to 75th minute) in games where Liverpool were level or head

Some of this was likely baked into Slot's thinking going into the season. But the over-reliance on the core set of players was more a response to a season where he spent a lot of the time about 2-3 bad results from getting his P45.

The decision that I can't find justification for is not using Curtis Jones enough. Sure he's featured in 32 league games, but in terms of minutes he's played 19.5 x 90s, compared to MacAllister's 27.6. This makes little sense given Curtis has been performed the better of the two and has the greater physicality/engine - which becomes increasingly important whenever Wirtz plays in midfield.
