The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

Personally , and i know it may not be a popular opinion , but i think they over achieved last year and conversely underachieved this season.

If you asked any Liverpool fan at the start of the 24/25 season what they realistically expected from the year ahead, few would have said they would be champions.

Oh cnut rare, I'd imagine that's an opinion that the majority of people would have.

Agree. But there was enough talent at the club that it wouldn't have been off the table as a possible outcome.

I was one of the few anywhere that said this season would be one of transition due to the high levels of change within the squad last season despite the money spent. If I knew Arsenal and City would have been as average as they’ve been, I would have said a title was still a strong possibility though. This season has been a lower standard at the top than last season. I certainly would have expected us to get progressively better as the season went on though and shown signs of promise for next season. It’s been anything but that. The only silver lining is we are likely to scrape a CL spot because everyone else has been so bad.

Phil mentioned about how if this season and last season were reversed we’d all be loving Slot but we can’t ignore how it’s been the other way around. Slot looked the real deal last season when he had inherited Klopp’s balanced squad with more legs in squad and more leaders throughout the team. He’s looked lost this season with an unbalanced squad and everyone looks slow.

The drop off in intensity on and off the pitch is galling and Slot’s interviews don’t inspire confidence at all. There are rumours spilling out about how Slot has basically lost the dressing room and the team plays exactly like that. If those rumours are even remotely true then he has to go because there’s no coming back from it.

This summer is another big one in the market and the one thing that is badly needed is some leadership and big characters to raise the standards of the group because clearly they’ve dropped off a cliff. We don’t need much more technically gifted players who we have to carry. We need leaders and athletes in the middle of the park along with two wingers who can frighten the life out teams both with and without the ball. A right back that can defend would be a help too, especially one that isn’t made of straw.

Feels like if he knew he was leaving he'd be a bit more vague with his words?

Still, @Shabby will be delighted to hear of another transition season ;)

Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed Alexander Isak returned to partial team training after an adductor issue, while Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to train for the first time. Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah remain unavailable as they have not yet resumed team training but are close to returning. Ibrahima Konate missed training due to a personal reason and Florian Wirtz was unwell, but both are now available.

No it hasn't. Last season was just as shit as this one. This bumnal side, for all their flaws are better than Liverpool’s from last season.

So many mistakes on and off the pitch have contributed to this shambles(the one uncontrollable was the death of Jota, everything else is on the staff and players). A huge mistake was giving Salah two more years on a huge salary which then meant not acceding to Diaz's deserved wage demands. There also seems to be a lack of good coaching. Under Klopp's coaching team players like Fabinho, Trent, Diaz, Szobo and others were coached into becoming much better players especially in their first few months at the club-some didnt even play any matches. One aspect I hear mentioned a lot is lack of intensity. If you look at the players who are gone from last season Jota, Diaz and Nunez were all very high energy players(replaced by Etikike, Gapko & Isak). Bradley another big loss on the energy front. Trent for different reasons. MacAllister getting some abuse but he has never been a high energy player.
