The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

I'll tell you what though, Slot has continuously let down by the players he backs. Vergil as captain, Gakpo (cleared the ball off the Wolves line FFS), Salah ruined the overlap.

All 3 have repeatedly floundered at key moments in key games.

At lot of this is his own making and he's picking the latter 2 continuously so it's really him to blame ...

Wait what my point again?

Oh yeah sliding doors.
Yes, there has been plenty of moments where players have been at fault. For example, Van Dijk and Konate making a mess of a basic defensive situation to give Wolves the lead last night. This is not something we saw much of in years under Klopp.

But it all comes back to the initial approach IMO from kick off. Risk averse, sideways, laboured and passive football leaves you hostage to moments like that as the game wears on and weaker opposition grow into the game and sniff a goal and nerves set in. You can make that error and nobody bats an eyelid if you’re 2 or 3-0 up after actually going for opposition throats from the off. Even on Saturday against West Ham we actually made those errors but had a significant lead built up from a good start, albeit aided with set piece goals. The current style is just not the Liverpool way and there was a lot of points picked up while playing putrid stuff this season. I often find myself on my phone whilst watching a game now and that never happened before.

Also, there’s big shouts for Rio to start and I am mostly in favour of it but the winning goal came as a result of him making almost no effort to put a tackle in on the Wolves player in his vicinity. It looks horrific on watching back. Do that under Klopp and he wouldn’t be seen for months on end but it’s a representation of the meekness we have to endure weekly now.

I didn't hear any analysis but it looked to me that Virgil got a push in the back in the lead up to Wolves opener. Was it just minimal contact ?

Virgil and the Liverpool players didn't complain much and I presume VAR checked it ?

I also thought that the Wolves keeper made one of best saves I've seen in the EPL.

Confidence is low - I was sure that Liverpool would go on a run but after the WH result, this poor display makes me doubt my expectation

It was a slight nudge but not enough to get a free kick. He got himself wrong side of the ball and got a nudge that did put him off any jump but you only get a free for that if you exaggerate a fall to the ground after the contact.

Sa made a good save from a deflected Rio shot but wouldn’t say it was one of the best ever but a fine save nonetheless. There was a comical mix up on the line between Jones and Gakpo too but there wasn’t that much in the way of chances which says enough.

The funny thing is, Liverpool have been on few mini runs without defeat or with wins but you don’t notice them as the football is so turgid.

Liverpool:

Alisson,

Gomez, Van Dijk, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Salah, Jones, Gakpo, Robertson, Gravenberch, Ngumoha.

Subs: Mamardashvili, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Chiesa, Ekitike, Frimpong, Nyoni, Morrison.

Not sure if I’m watching the midweek game on repeat or the cup game live. Seems awfully like the same shite all over again.

The only difference is Rio is providing some spark in attack in moments. Nothing overly special but he’s able to beat a man and wants to get the ball into the box. Everyone is so used to the ball being recycled though that nobody is gambling by making a run to get on the end of his crosses.
