The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

:lol!:

That got me thinking…..,

It must be a wonderful time to be an Arsenal fan these days.

Utd and Liverpool in the doldrums in a bum fight for a European spot and they’ve a great squad, top of the league, flying it in Europe and a load of players coming back from injury.

And yet they haven’t a testicle between the lot of ‘em.
Really? What do you call those round, wrinkly, hairy things I often have resting on your chin then?

Strange game. Not a 2-0.
Brighton created more clear cut chances than Liverpool but their finishing was shit.
They probably shaded it on the xG shite.

Clean sheet due to Brighton ineptitude in front of goal moreso than liverpool being solid tbh.
Yes, it was a strange one. Brighton certainly had their chances which is worrying and shows the team has loads to work on but it’s important to win and keep things stable for now. We are far from back though.

Looked like Salah could have played his last game and he played more for the team when he came on than most other times this season which was good to see.

The team is still searching for the balance between being defensively sound, a serious threat in attack and having control. Of course the balance between those is very hard for any team to find but there is improvement for sure. Ekitike continuing to bag goals is a sight for sore eyes. He’s been a superb signing.

I think he's an excellent player and starting to look a lot stronger on the ball but he's playing in a system that doesn't get anywhere close to getting the best out of him.
Wirtz is finding his feet. He is really good at knitting the play together in central areas and combining with others in quick interplay but he cost an awful lot and assists and goals will be expected to be added for the price paid. Simple as that.

But we are a better team with him than without.

The xG Philosophy
Liverpool (2.10) 2-0 (2.09) Brighton

I think xG is a good indicator of how a match went but can be interpreted in a number of ways ie today you could say Brighton deserved a draw or you could say Liverpool took their chances or they defended Brighton's chances. The chances Liverpool had on the break at the end skewed it maybe.
I saw an interesting thing about xG over Liverpool's start to the season a few weeks ago. In the first five matches when Liverpool accrued 15 pointed on xG they should have had 8 points. In the next 5 matches they lost 4 (v Chelsea, Palace, Brentford & ManU) and won 1 (v Villa). In those 5 matches xG said they should have had 10 points. Over the full 10 matches xG had it exactly correct.

Any team playing Liverpool will get big chances, that's not going to be fixed overnight. Its improving game on game though and the January window opens soon so who knows what that will bring.

Wirtz is looking more settled though. Still has an issue when Salah is on the pitch too.

Konate has been better too but then he goes and gets a yellow for a hatchet tackle in midfield with all his team mates behind and the player passing sideways.
