The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

I can't see that happening. FSG don't operate like this. Slot has banked a lot of credit and even with some more bad results, he'll get time. Mind you, if top 4 becomes impossible, then things might change.

Liverpool were convincing v Villa and excellent v Madrid. Poor against City but possibly unfortunate with the disallowed goal. Unlucky with the deflection and Dokus goal was a worldly.

Utd signed Cunha and Mbueno and they were obviously experienced and proven PL performers. It's much harder for players from other leagues to adjust. Isak didn't have a proper pre season and has injuries so he's not at his best yet. The other signings will take time to adjust and IMO Slot will bet leeway because of this
FSG don’t make decisions lightly but we saw Rodgers lose the run of the team, results went down the swanny and he was sacked mid season. It can happen. I’m not calling for it but the fixtures coming up mean there is no excuse to not put a run together and if he can’t, you’d have to wonder where the team goes from there.

I do think we were devoid of luck on Sunday but City were the much better side and made their own luck by forcing the play and playing the game in Liverpool’s half, especially the first half.

It’s been 11 PL games and the new signings have misfired for the most part. When you spend big on someone like Wirtz, he should be able to impact a big game like last Sunday. He struggled big time. He’s very light and not very fast. That’s an issue in the PL. There was a moment Sunday where he turned and had a pass through to Ekitike but he fluffed it. That’s a worry because that should be bread and butter for him, that’s what he was bought for. I won’t write him off but the longer it goes on where he struggles to adjust, the harder it will be for him to mentally cope.

TL;DR it's not an excuse for Slot's side underperforming, but it highlights the type of factors which FSG will take into account when it comes to assessing his performance and future employment prospects.
It's for the SMCs really, who will surely froth at the mouth at this
FSG are patient but they are not mugs.

They'll take a lot of things into account and a big one will be:

1. At what point will Slot have had the benefit of the new signings, match fit, for a critical mass amount of cumulative minutes

(...in practical terms that'll largely come down to getting Isak fit and on the pitch often enough with Wirtz and Ekitike. The month or so that Mo is away at AFCON will likely be the initial litmus test for whether the three of them can work well together)

2. How is the team performing at that point & what do the future prospects look like

If Liverpool have a poor season but Slot ends the season showing signs that the new signings are gelling well and the side overall look in decent shape then FSG won't throw the baby out with the bath water due to one ba(l)d season.

One of the Anfield Wrap guys made a good point on this recently.

In pure transfer fees Liverpool lost around £265m of talent in the summer. Arguably you could add another £100m+ on to that if you consider the free Trent would've gone for if he had a few year on his contract and the fact that no fees were booked this summer for the Harvey Elliott (loan with obligation to buy) andd Tsimikas (loan only) deals.

That's a lot of talent out the door immediately on day 1.

Yes, they spent a monstruous sum (~£425m) on new arrivals but they've not yet really anywhere near the full benefit / usage from those signings
  • Leoni's season was ended before he could complete a full 90min appearance
  • Isak (30% of the summer spend) was clearly still working his way back to a gameweek 1 level of fitness, when an injury ruled him out
  • Frimpong went almost injury-free for 6 seasons yet has picked up two hamstring injuries and missed a lot of games already
Again, not an excuse. But it goes some way to adding some nuance to the "...but they spent a trillion in the summer and got worse" discussion.

I haven't run the numbers but I'd reckon the average market value of the XI who started games for Liverpool this season isn't hugely higher than it was for the bulk of last season. But that should be less and less the case as the season progresses.

There's no doubting that Liverpool are in worse shape now than they were last season (up to securing the title). The clock is ticking for Slot to change that.

At a minimum - to keep his job - he needs to secure CL football and demonstrate that, going into a new season, the signings he has grafted on to the rump of Klopp's team constitute a credible title-challenging football team for the 2026/27 season.

Yeah I think FSG will pull the plug if they continue to circle the drain as they've done before.

First half performances like Sunday won't help. What even was the plan?

The ruled out goal doesn't help but you'd be hard pressed to think that would have made any difference ultimately. All credit to momentum swings.

Any sort of argument you’d have against Van Dijk being a very good player

The thing is, he actually doesn't even hold this position.

Numerous times he has openly admitted that he thinks that VVD is an excellent footballer.

The obsessive posting about any perceived wrongdoing or mistake is one that he should take to the psychiatrist's couch though imho ;)

This from the man that has spent the last decade revelling in the troubles at OT, and rightfully so too.

But paybacks a bitch m8. And I haven't even started.
