Where does he play for Liverpool, looks a fabulous player but there doesnt seem to be a very immediate obvious answer to that. False 9?

My guess is he'll play in a central attacking midfield role (as part of a 3, with 2 of Gravenberch/MacAllister/Jones/Szoboszlai behind him).

But he could equally play as a false 9 (...either most weeks or some weeks against tougher opposition, like Diaz did at times).

He has also played as a wide attacker coming in off the left, but Liverpool are well-stocked there currently with Diaz and Gakpo.

Fair enough. I'm just shocked at Liverpool spending so much on one player . Man city/utd and maybe Arsenal yes but it doesn't seem to be the Liverpool way so they must really rate him especially since they more or less got a free run at him once he decided to leave the bundsliga.

Under FSG, Liverpool have showed a willingness to selectively go big fee-wise on a player if they really think he's got the potential to be transformational - e.g. VVD & Alisson. You could even throw Keita into that bucket, but he clearly didn't work out.

It's big money but it's on a guy who is probably in the 5th to 10th best player in the world bracket. Plus his age profile is such that if he does well at Liverpool he'll more than hold his value across a 3-4 year timeframe. FSG love that sh1t.

IMHO it spells the end for Harvey Elliott. It'll be interesting to see what the net cost will be to swap Elliott for Wirtz. That's the kind of lens that the Liverpool hierarchy tends to view these things.

I think Elliott will go on to have a really good career, but likely has a lower long-term ceiling than Wirtz.

They paid what were then record fees for VVD and Allison at the time - granted, neither lasted long as Chelsea purchased Kepa for more money soon after and MU went in big for Big Harry within a year or so but point remains, Liverpool have history of splashing out in relatively recent pl era.

Big difference is they funded VVD and Allison from player sales, primarily Coutinho.
Their net spend in last five years is only 9th in premier league, primarily due to break even for season just gone. In three seasons prior to that, they were 2nd, 5th and 3rd biggest spenders.

Absolutely thought the guy was nailed on to join City as KDB replacement when I first saw him play a few seasons back. Delighted he's chosen Liverpool, a serious talent.

According to Transfermarkt, EPL transfer spend balance (net) ‘rankings’ for Liverpool are:

24/25: 16th
23/24: 7th
22/23: 11th

Maybe we’re not comparing apples with apples? Granted I would assume that Liverpool’s total Salary / Total revenue % is probably in the top 3-4 places. Maybe someone has data on this.
