The Official Irish Rugby Thread

14 centrally contracted players on the top money.

At least 3 of them nowhere near good enough to be playing for the national side. Probably a lot more by next year

Big clear out needed . 'Fez' doesnt have the appetite for it.
That's a damning list. As of now you'd say only Sheahan, Keenan, beirne and JGP are worth it and two of them are nearing the blunt end of their career.

Can't see any of the young Leinster lads getting a cut of this pie anytime soon.
Crawley and Casey should. Edogbo will be eyeing it up as well. Silver linings for Munster

Ya but they were born in the south of the wrong county so tough titties.

I think we have a few things happening here at the same time which may be impacting the senior team.
South African coaching for the D4 ladyboys , so they are playing differently than before.
The succession plan was never implemented when it should have been, possibly 2 years ago.
The over reliance on the Ladyboys and the disregard for the other provinces.

The Nienebar move is more baffling now. I'm not buying into the "he's Rassie's spy" but he's off the Boks books for 2 seasons and then goes back there for the WC.
He's not had the impact he or Leinster thought he would have (that could be more Leinster starting their decline too
The other thing the media have turned their head too is Goodman as attack coach. He limited Leinster and their fans were delighted he was leaving only to learn he was getting the National gig. He's another spoofer, who's taken both teams backwards.

Finally, the elephant in the room, the much spoken about Leinster conveyor belt isn't producing the players it needs. They hit a purple patch but it's dropped off massively. Name one of the Leinster second rows that isn't Ryan, McCarthy, or Snyman? The lad Culhane thought he'd walk into the Irish team, he's barely started in blue.

At the risk of coming across as a heretic - there's a few issues with Jack and Craig that might hold them back.

Jack's confidence has been rattled by the Faz fuck acting - but somehow he has to eliminate the odd wobbler (such as kicking penos out on the full) and must improve his stats from the tee. Easier with backing from your coach but must happen.

Craig ticks almost every box but he lacks the killer pace on the medium length run. He's ok close to the line but can't exploit a gap from 30M plus. Prob the successor to JGP as I think he's better than Doak.

Yeah, they definitley have their issues but JGP is starting into his own now too.
Crawley 100% needs to tighten up his kicking, or they need to start leaning into Casey more.
That's why I suggested Doak as he's a regular kicker.

Byrne probably deserves the 10 jersey next if we're being honest. Which means Sam P has to be dropped fully as he's not an adaptable bench player.

And he's tiny.

There is something to the Nienaber stuff, I've maintained that Farrell has been mostly putting good vibes on the back of good Leinster coaching. I'm not saying Nienaber is necessarily a bad coach, but he may not be coaching Leinster the way Farrell wants to play, unlike Lancaster and Schmidt.

If so, then you've got the vast majority o the team being coached one way, then Farrell is implementing game plans that are going a pretty different direction. And if Farrell isn't actually doing an enormous amount of coaching (and there is only so much you can do at international level), then you potentially have a problem.

I would say the "knows the system" comments are a symptom of that, i.e. we couldn't be arsed getting you up to speed with what the Leinster players know already cause someone else has coached them on it.

Very valid point.

Leinster are constantly looking for the edge to win the CC cup. Nienaber and the Galacticos. Most likely causing issues for the National Team - a challenge for Faz and Humphs

You're right. One of the main symptoms of that is JGP. He'd stop forward momentum last Thursday just to kick the ball away. Contrast that to Leinster where he's sniping away at rucks and most crucially if all shadowing backline moves to get an offload in broken play once someone has gone through a gap
