Ease up buddy.
He has 3 double boogies today. I only saw the tee shot on two of those and all week long those wayward ones were getting a nice bounce out of the trees for most of the others. Cam Young had 4 of them.
Lowry is a superb golfer. One of our best ever in over 100 years. Has won our open and a Major. What a player…
After Lowry and McIlroy go we might not see an Irish golfer at the top again for decades, according to the lads involved with our young amateur golfers.
These are Incredible times. Appreciate it for what it is I think
Yeah, this is the third generation of Irish golfers I've seen.
First was O'Connor Jnr, Darcy, Walton, Rafferty, Feherty & Smyth.
Each did reasonably well on European tour, won 4 or 5 events, had the odd memorable Ryder cup moment, had one decent tilt at the Open, but they had zero impact in the US especially the 3 majors there.
Half of them never played a US Major. O'Connor Jnr played in one, the Masters and missed the cut.
Lowry getting up to 3rd on Sunday was more excitement than all of them put together had in their careers at US Majors
Next was Harrington, Clarke, McGinley and a few years later Gmac. These were at the top table of world golf. Harrington basically spent all the noughties in the World's top 10. They averaged 10+ wins on European Tour each. They had success in Pga tour events.
Were in regular contention at all 4 majors - Harrington had 5 top 5s before winning. Looked like this golden generation blew their Major chances until Harrington won at the age of 36, the first major winner from the 26 counties and first from the island since 1947. And Clarke wins aged 42, a month after McIlroy wins his 1st aged 22.
So yes, heady days with the third generation McIlroy and Lowry.
12 majors since 08. Likely to go back to the average Irish golfer days of the 80s and early 90s after McIlroy. At least we had cyclists, qualification for 3 major soccer tournaments and The Double back then!
