The Official Golf Thread

Tbh I think he's matured as a nation over the last few years.
I’m a huge fan of his golf.
Outside of that he was very badly managed in my opinion. I don’t know who was responsible for that.
Even in his teens as an amateur there was negative stories doing the rounds about him, his attitude and cockiness. The “traditionalists” in Irish golf didn’t spare the prodigy that’s for sure.
In hindsight I think it might have had something to do with his background and not being from the typical in elite golfing circles.

I’m absolutely thrilled to see how it has all turned out for him and his Mam, Dad and extended family. They suffered enough. An inspirational story. As a traditionalist of my era I hope his marriage sustains and he goes on to have a spectacular 2nd half of his golf career and in whatever direction in life he wants now.

If he did win in Quail Hollow & Oakmont the hype/pressure going to Portrush would be such a circus-no way he could cope.

Interesting the names that have won three of the four majors all of whom Rory has now surpassed, Watson, Trevino, Nelson, Snead, Mickleson, Speith, Floyd( a surprise-didnt think he was in that company) and Palmer (a surprise he didnt win all 4, failed to win US Open).

So many good players around nowadays- you would think that Koepka, Morikawa, Scottie, Xander & Bryson will all have several chances to win more majors in the next few years. Rahm, Speith, Thomas, Smith, Hideyki, Fitzpatrick, Reed or Shane could win another one or two.

Aberg & Hovland are probably favourites to be the next to win a first major although the Koreans are also good. Next American hard to spot-Bhatia is only 23. I would love to see Tommy Fleetwood break his duck-he has 8 top 10s in majors (probably the most of current players without winning-Monty had 10) edit- Finau has 11.
In my opinion talk of the calendar grand slam is not realistic. It just nuts. Too many complex variables that need to be right for it to happen.

Bobby Jones won the Grand Slam in 1930 which was:
U.S. Open, the Open, the U.S. Amateur and the British Amateur.

Masters didn't exist then and not sure if the US PGA was a bone fide Major.
Tbf to Bobby Jones, superb achievement winning four major events in one year but pros couldn't compete in two of them.
Talking about events not existing earlier, Rory, Tiger and Jack are the only three players to win gland slam and the Players championship.

Augusta have been dreading this moment for 14 years......

He's a funny one. He has played over 150 PGA tournaments and not won a single one, not to mind a major.

But seems to be consistently rated higher than you'd think by the betting markets and the media.

To be fair he seems to find himself in the top 5 and top 10 at a pretty good rate and he rarely misses the cut.

Just needs to keep throwing enough darts and eventually he'll get over the line?

First player on the PGA to win $25 million without winning a tournament!!
There are 160 players on tour and only about 40 tournaments I think. The big guns will win a couple each so that leaves about 155 going for 30 wins. It’s a tough gig, the place prize money makes it just about bearable.. 😂
