It would be hard to image a club taking a chance on < the unnamed Everton footballer > while this cloud is still over his head. Maybe reports in certain eastern european countries are less up to-date on this topic and were making a spurious link because they say that < the unnamed Everton footballer > was out of contract last month?

The professional footballer who was arrested in July 2021 on suspicion of multiple child sex offences has had his case referred to the Crown Prosecution Service.

CPS will now determine whether or not to bring a criminal prosecution against the player. The player cannot be named until he is charged. There is no timescale on any decision.

The player was suspended by his club shortly after his arrest and has been on bail since that point.

A CPS spokesperson said: “We received a file of evidence from Greater Manchester Police on 31 January 2023 following an investigation into allegations of multiple sexual offences. We are considering this material in line with our legal test.”

CPS must now decide whether or not there would be a realistic prospect of convicting the player and if pursuing a criminal prosecution would be in the public interest. Crown prosecutors will run the case through a threshold test. This must be passed before they proceed with any case.

Every case will be different. But certainly if minors are involved then I can't see how a club these days could possibly allow a player to continue with that hanging over his head.

Worth remembering that Adam Johnson played 28 games for Sunderland after is initial arrest. I was at his final every game, the 2-2 at Anfield.
