So if an Irish fella rapes someone he could get a harsher prison sentence than a foreign lad who rapes someone, because prison might be difficult for them?

No, because it isn't at the highest level of assault. If he'd cut or stabbed her with the knife it would move itto 14/15 years.

I would have thought this fits into a greater level of degradation , although why this is actually graded ive no idea as all rape is degrading for victim.

I could give you an answer to that, but it would be quite disturbing and would involve things you might rather not consider.

(This might seem like a glib answer and I genuinely don't mean it to come across that way. All rape is horrific, and if it were up to me the sentences would be longer across the board. As it stands though, I can see why the Judge put this at the this mid to high level, rather than at the highest level)
