I've often wondered if Celtic (or rangers) joined the English league and weren't immediately successful would their crowds tail away a tad?

i.e. it's easy to get 55k to a game when you're almost guaranteed to win 90% of home games and subsequently trophies (in a weak league), whereas say if they joined the epl and had 5-10 seasons in a row with no trophies or top 8 finishes would numbers drift off somewhat?


I used to always watch the Scottish games on telly but more or less gave up 8-10 years ago, it was just so damn boring and the quality of play was so poor ..... had hoped hearts/hibs or Aberdeen might step up when the huns were demoted but alas no

I think there'd be sufficient dyed-in-the-wool fans who'd watch Celtic (and The Rangers) to sustain their crowds to a much higher level than most English clubs while they'd be finding their way initially in a competitive league. It doesn't help that they're both from the same city I grant you but Scotland has the highest per capita football audience in Europe.

Don't think we'll ever find out but chances are Celtic would have the fan base and commercial heft to buy the quality of players to compete at that level. I would think if you can fill a stadium to watch Celtic inevitably beat likes of St Mirren, Patrick Thistle, etc, you would do so for what would be more competitive, high profile fixtures against teams who are most likely filling 40k plus stadiums themselves (exceptions like Bournemouth, Brentford, notwithstanding).
No disrespect to fine, long established club like St Mirren but their stadium doesn't hold even 10,000!

We have £100m + in the bank right now....

We don't have the board capable of spending any of that to beat a pub team to gain access to a further £40m.
With a competent and ambitious board, Celtic could do well in the top European competition right now.

We don't have that and will never have that, so it's moot.

The massive annoyance right now is that this was all so predictable.

yes the team should still have enough about it to beat that mob last night. But when the staleness sets in, it's nearly impossible to shift it without significant changes.

We can look towards CCV and McGregor and say those guys should have enough about them to carry us through.... but they were the worst offenders.

Schmeichel was competent
Ralston is ok as cover but was terrible last night
CCV was absolutely useless. I can only assume he's carrying an injury... again
Scales.... pass marks as he was by far the better of the two. having to move him to left back to cover for a guy who can't last is crazy
KT- was rotten. Absolutely awful. He looks finished
Nygren was terrible
McGregor the worst of the lot
Reo- at least he tried
Daizen- same
Yang- Atrocious
Forrest- just hasn't got it any more

Dane Murray- Fine
Colby Donovan- the one bright spark on an awful evening
Engels - at least we looked like going forward when he came on
McCowan-Same
Idah......Christ almighty.... I would absolutely love a kid from Cork to be the boy who does it for Celtic.... but he's just bad.

Celtic would win the English premier league every single year..... no doubt about it. They'd have to build a stadium twice the size and put on an extension to the trophy room.

Shocking display.

Not one Celtic player performed.

Some of them were brutal. Engels, Hatate, Maeda, Ralston, Schmeichel, Idah.
No quality up front. Not a decent finisher amongst them

How can you criticise any player last night without criticising Mcgregor? He was an absolute disgrace, you'd be forgiven for thinking he wanted to lose the tie.
