The Official Athletics Thread

Was out and about yesterday so only catching up last night

McEllhenny blowing a gasket is a pattern. Same thing happened at euro champs in munich on the track. When he took the hill 12 mins into the race he literally stopped. Like he was spent. He said to Cathal Dennehy that he just went out too hard. He didn't seem comfortable just sitting on Hicks in the early running. Kept taking the lead. His coach better get him sitting an kicking in a few 10k races as the year goes on. Gidey ran a cracker.

Nice to see Jackob not getting his own way in the Senior. Not that it affected the outcome. But Crippa and Cairess had two decent cuts off him. At least they weren't defering to him too much. Hard to know what happened Fay. He ran a 5k indoors the week after NCAA (and broke the Irish record) maybe he was just overcooked. Saw no quotes from him

Sarah Healy broke her metatarsal coming down the hill.

Luke mcCann said the 4x1500m basically shat the bed. Huge underperformance but i haven't watched that one yet.

Senior Women getting the bronze is an unbelievable rocky level underdog story. No Fionnuala Mc, no Ciara Mageean. Fair play to them.

Yeah, well done him for sure - Fay will be disappointed though .
Top analysis as usual on RTÉ - their athletics panellists are always brilliant. Catherina McKiernan reckoned the course was highly specialised and that some folks with aspirations towards a decent showing would have been badly caught out by the hills and the ramps.
Nice interview with Griggs and Casey too - top lads.
The RTE studio coverage was very good alright. They were a bit too quick to jump 2 footed into Sarah Healy and the a suspicion that the occassion just got to her (again). Hope she is not out too long.

RTE were compromised somewhat in the post race, a few of the usual on course journalists had flights cancelled out of Dublin on Friday, hence the mobile phone interviews.
Mad course though. Was a nightmare for track runners. some of those downhills were awful. Your quads would have been wrecked.

Poor Nick Griggs though, he kept looking over his shoulder with the race won. Legs went and that was it. What an awful feeling. his interview was so impressive at the same time (nearly as impressive as Caseys new hair cut). These 2 boys are going to be so good.

Some performance by Rhasidat Adeleke over the weekend. New Irish record over 200m, fastest this season and 4th fastest between this season and last. All of that with her first race of the year and in the middle of a heavy training block for the 400m, which she's concentrating on.

She's Amazing. NCAA indoors is 10th March so she's about 6 weeks from her peak.

It AutoQ's her for worlds in Budapest in Aug so she won't have to prick about getting ranking points. She already has AutoQ for the 400m.

She also ran 7:20 for the 60m yesterday which for a tall 400m runner is something else

There is a good slate of indoor meets on this weekend.

Not much Irish interest but the real kickoff to the indoor season is here both in Europe and in the US

Karlsruhe indoor is a WA gold meet. Is on tonight at 19:00 live on WA youtube.

The pick of it is the women's 3k it'll have Lemelm Hailu world indoor champ from last year, Gatachew world outdoor steeple silver and rumourd to be 46XY DSD, Embaye world 1500m indoor gold last year and Dawit Seyaum world outdoor 5k Gold.

Women's 60m is the other good showdown. Kambunje, Dina Asher Smith and Ewa Swaboda.

Swaboda was in the news because on new years night a polish Athlete called Sebastian Uraniak tried to break into her Gaff (she was in a party in another city) and a third Polish international Jakub Krzewina was home, beat him sideways and broke his leg. Apparently Uraniak has history of being a bit of a creep.

Over in the states on Friday night there is a meet in Boston University. Its notorious for being a fast track so All the On Athletics fellas are trying to hit 5k standard (13:07) but the race is the 3k. You have Yarad Naguse (NCAA 1500m champ 2020 and Olympian) Mario Garcia (NCAA 2021 champ and 4th in the world 1500m) against Louis Grijalva (4th world 5k).

Saturday in NYC Sage Hurta and Ajee Wilson are going for the US 1km record. Wilson hasn't lost indoors in about 5 years and not in the armory in NYC in 10. Hurta was great last year and has been pumping the record for a while but now she has to race Wilson.

The womens1500m looks good too. Katlyn Tuohy has been hyped for years and is kicking ass at NCAA level taking on a bunch of high level pros. Alicia Monson and Josette Norris.

There'll be plenty on youtube by Sunday morning

Some savage running already this weekend. The 5000 in BU was interesting. Keely looking as good as ever, thought she looked a bit thinner if anything.
