The Official Athletics Thread

Just catching up now. USA dropped baton in the mixed 100 and Failed to Q in the men's 400m. Fuckin LOL

They sacked the relay coaches after Paris and All..

The difference in quality between the women's legs and the men's legs for Ireland was stark. Kelly is still only 17 mind.

I thought Healy did okay. Cadden was just outgunned and they didn't have enough to pull it out of the fire

Anyone know what happened Jamaica in Irelands heat, the wan in leg one ran about 70s must have been injured out of the blocks or something
I love the way the Yanks have so much form for this shit and have never properly fixed it. Rugged individualism, how are ya?

Just run down for silver in the men's 100m by Simbine and the Saffas
Run out of it for 4th in the women's 100m and Spain sensationally just ran them down to take gold in the women's 400m

Absolute shitshow from them

The splits aren't that easy to track down but the two big runs split as follows:

Mixed Relay on Saturday:
Kelly....................46.31
Adeleke.............50.42
Greene...............45.68
Mawdsley.........50.15

Women's second chance on Sunday
Becker................51.41
Adeleke.............50.38
McCann.............52.89
Mawdsley..........50.01

That's a sizzler from Mawdsley in both races - she looked really good in both.
Adeleke presumably is still doing plenty of heavy training - at no point yet this season has she been close to her best and that either means heavy ongoing training in the early season or she's not going great. You'd suspect the former.

Becker ran a flying 51.04 on the first leg of the women's heat yesterday.

McCann ran 53.10 in the second leg of yesterday's women's heat

Phil Healy ran 53.54 in the final leg of the women's heat yesterday and 53.62 in the second leg of the mixed final today. McCann is just shading that battle ATM.

Good result, but you'd be a small bit worried about Adeleke. Could be early season rustiness and heavy training as you say. The Healy demotion, I could see it coming. 52.89 against 53.5/6 made it an easy choice. Right now, we've got 2.5 very strong runners, which is impressive for a country our size. Would be fantastic if one of the younger ones can make the jump. Two 49s and two 50.xx or 51 flat performers would put us in with a shout.

It's such a pity this champs is buried so deep in the calender, in the public consciousness and in the athletes priorities.

real sense that the margin for error for the Irish and in particular Rashidat Adeleke have been tightened even further. Just because individuals and teams seem to be responding.

The Spanish women's 4x400m looked sensational and there seems to be an endless supply of sub 50 clockers all of a sudden (jaeger and whittaker spring to mind). She does keep referring to her training load so we'll trust in flo but Ellie Beer is more Becker than Adeleke and it didn't look like that. New coaching set up seems to be suiting Mawdesley

From an Irish perspective it's generally positive, Everyone ran to form really. The men didn't fuck up (Raftery is only 24 went 45.88 in the men's and 45.89 out of the blocks in the mixed), Kelly, Greene and O'Donnell were all undercooked coming into this.

Conor Kelly is only 17 so has plenty of meat on the bone from his 46mids same with Aaron Keane he went 46 high today but is only 23. Rachel McCann is 23 and hopefully can turn 53s into 51s like Becker did. And she has the relay money to help her. Doggett is 18 and hopefully will still improve he's a world u20 finalist.

The vibes were good. The interviews seemed positive and there were good pictures of them fuck acting about together so morale seemed pretty good.

Its a shame the mixed and the men took such a bad beating. Hard to dress that one up short term.

Chinese crowds were legitimately good, USA are a pity you'd think national pride would carry a touch further.

Major fuck up/bad luck by Jamaica in the men's Kishane never even got to touch a baton

Sherika Jackson has plenty to think about too.

Brits have some good women too.
