The Official Athletics Thread

Jaysus, that's a bit of a shitshow. No hassle for the yanks - their "C" team would win the mens - but messy for the others.

Don't whether the bombastic but slightly clueless Peter Collins treatment or the mortifyingly patronising Mary Morrissey treament is the preferred RTE approach - but they'll turn up when there's a chance of a medal. As ever, the panellists should save the day.

Format is the same as the Bahamas last year I think Guapo - except Paris qualification was the prize then.

Well these days it'll be earnestness of Paul O'Flynn.

But surely with the impending redundancy packages on offer this will be a lap of honour for Roscommon's most eligible bachelor (1986)

Hopefully he'll be out to settle a few scores and burn all his bridges before heading off to mondelo for spin is his Mk 1 Escort

From Cathal Dennehy's interview with Chris O'Donnell

"O’Donnell says the focus here is not on medals. He said “nobody is going to be doubling up on the first day” of action and the Irish will “spread our eggs across a few baskets”, though the line-ups will only be revealed about an hour before the races.

“The one secret we don’t have is that our goal is to qualify three teams, not to prioritise one event or get medals,” he says. “If it comes to a stage where one is qualified on day one and we go into day two needing to prioritise another, that’s what we’ll do instead of taking the final seriously."

Jaysus, strategic racing from an accomplished athletics team. How the f**k are RTE going to handle that? Doesn't fit any of their standard templates.

Can't wait. Paul will be like a fella at a funeral, Derv and Heff assuring him it was part of a higher purpose

Greg and Dave in the booth will have a falling out live on air

Lineups will be interesting alright. I wonder will they split Mawdesley and Adeleke for the heats or stack the women's 4 and trust the panel in the mixed (which is what they should do)

The men are weak no matter what way you spin it - I find it hard to see them still in the competition after Sunday. They won't be short of fire and effort but their form is well down the field. They might go for a v. risky strategy on Day 1, then go for the tried and trusted on Day 2 when the slots are given out if Day 1 hasn't paid off.
