The Official Athletics Thread

Was on a plane through the full session on Sunday evening and missed all the craic. Great to watch the events on YouTube, LOL, knowing there was medals on the way.

English is an outstanding performer - consistently bangs out the 1:45, no matter what type of race it is. Never failed to medal in a Euro final - some going. He's right when he says he'll only appreciate his achievements when he's done - to be able to parlay those 1:45s into so many medals is a huge achievement.

Sarah Healy - in fairness she's always been tipped for greatness on here. I remember watching her break the record at the Cork City Sports two years ago and she was a class apart. What a buzz for her to finally deliver a big performance in a championship race. I reckon the way she kept on running the European circuit last year after the Olympics - slowly accumulating scalps out to September - was, in hindsight, a great move. Then, combine that with the new training regime and hard racing in Jan/Feb and the champion emerged. She's usually a front runner, so to see her biding her time and then nailing it was great. Plus, now that she's broken her senior duck, she is a serial medallist (y)

We were in the Stade de France when O'Connor made 14th in the Olympics - tbf I hadn't really considered her as a player at that point. I wonder how far she can take it.

Coscoran ran a very good race - stayed all the way and positioned himself right where he needed to be. Unfortunately he did the same in Tokyo in the 1500 and got the same result - great position but couldn't close it. He must wonder how to get that kick mastered. He must also BTW, be s**t-sick of seeing Ingebrigtsen disappear over the horizon in races.

I see Hiko Tonosa Haso is entered in Rotterdam next month. He already has the "B" standard from Dublin 2024. He quietly equalled Gidey's HM PB there in Seville in January. Rotterdam is about as kind a course as you can get for a 26.2 (apart from the downhill BQ ones) so he might get the record down a clip if the weather is right.

Fearghal Curtin in Berlin HM and Barry Keane in Boston seem to be our only other elite long-distance operators in the first half of the year.

Road to Nanjing closed today

Looks like Coscoran in the 1500/3k
Gormley (3k)
English and McPhillips (800m)
Kate O'Connor (Pent)
Sarah Lavin (60h)
Sarah Healy (3000m)
Sophie O'Sullivan (1500m)

And relays if they want to send em

Weak fields for a world event really. Jakob is in the 3000m they could not fill the quota there 14 entrants for 15 spots
Hoey is there, Jakob is there, Duplantis is there, Tsegay is there but the talent list gets thin fairly quick alright.

Ideal meet for the Irish runners - a high level championship but with good chances of progressing.

Meanwhile, Sophie O'Sullivan nailed the "B" standard for the 1500 last week.
