Interesting CSO data here. Our birth rate isn’t high enough to sustain the number of older people in the country.

Employees paying taxes etc etc pay for pensions, healthcare provision and so forth for the retired. That’s not me saying the retired don’t pay tax or didn’t when they worked.

Of course each generation needs workers paying taxes to fund social welfare and pensions etc, that's been the way of it since social welfare and pensions began. But despite our dropping birth-rate, the overall population of this country is on the increase, and has been for many years so why you're warning the declining birth-rate isn't enough to sustain our elderly lord knows.

A falling birth rate will mean less people working in 20 years or so. Unless we have immigration to plug the gap.

The CSO are experts in this stuff so I listen to their analysis and recommendations and take them very seriously.

If there isn't immigration, there WILL be a problem. And that immigration cannot be taken for granted and can bring ots own social tensions. Plus, with a declining fertility rate, you got a breakdown in family structures with negative consequences following on. The decline in fertility rates seems to be a cultural shift rather than economic-based. A change in mindset is needed.

The climate change brigade have been saying with fifty years or more that the end is nigh. Develop some healthy scepticism and don't use the cheap, loaded "denier" tag.

But we can see the climate change around us. Temperatures are rising every year in summer and winter and we are getting more extreme weather events.

Good climate policies such as more public transport benefit everyone.
