Yeah I'm hearing that a lot too and it makes me feel so sad for them.
It's terrible.
Like this generation (mine) and the next, they're in their mid to late 30's, the ones that chased a career, college, the ones Leo Varadkar said he works hard for.
They finally get around to getting a 30 year mortgage, and one of two things happens:
1: They have 1.5 kids, and stop there, because it's too expensive to raise kids, and they're broke, or tired as fuck after the first one/two, because they're older parents.
2: They have left it too late, biology kicks in, and IVF hasn't worked.
They're the lucky ones.
There's a whole section of people who haven't made enough cash to get a house together, and it's really scary.
Basic enough houses in Cork are going for 400k.
Say you get 40k together, and a 30 year mortgage, average interest rate of 4% for the lifetime of the mortgage.
Your total repayments there will be 620k, which is really scary to a lot of people, how do they fill a pension to survive later, etc.
That's a huge amount of financial pressure if you don't earn megabucks, it's no wonder they're making the decision not to slap kids on top.
The government should have, and can make it easier for people born here to obtain a mortgage, to make housing cheaper, and to build more homes.
It's failed this generation in more ways than one, and it'll have a long lasting impact on irish society.
