MM pushing rivals out of the nest does help on that score.
I’m sure Michael McGrath is very disappointed to be appointed to a 300k a year role. He’s hardly a rival either, they may not be best pals but they were both bankers to keep their seat and Michael McGrath has never once shown a hint of trying to oust Micheál.

That's not the point. Pretend MM is abducted by aliens (or just retires) .....the FF front bench would go into leadership election mode and the next obvious choice is McGrath or was til MM annointed Chambers.

A bonus to Micheál no doubt. McGrath probably the only FF contender at Commissioner level anyway.

Nobody suggesting McGrath was very disappointed landing a plum European job. Thing is though, many people think Micheal Martin had an ulterior motive for it.

McGrath was lauded for his stewardship of Ministry of Finance, and was in the throes of preparing a second budget. He wasn't even on the projected short list for the European gig, MM who'd had a very long Dail innings was. Then all of a sudden within about a week, McGrath went from being added to the sort list to being nominated by MM. Little wonder the Times ran that article about Micheal Martin's rule of the FF party.

A strong leader of a party is a good thing. We’ve seen in FF and other parties what having a weak leader can do. Bertie and Micheál were both very successful in uniting the party behind the leader. Their predecessors not so much, Haughey, Reynolds and Cowen.

Tell that to the likes of Cowan, Kelliher, O'Flynn, O'Cuiv, O'Dea, and O'Callaghan.

The FF leaders all have had their issues but the notion that Micheal Martin is somehow one of only a couple of strong leaders uniting the FF party doesn't ring true imho.

Where is this projected short list?

You’ll always have dissenters and that’s a good thing. The crew above had various reasons for being unhappy with the leader at some stage but even his harshest critics would concede that he dealt with crises like Cowen’s drunk driving and Calleary’s breaching of Covid Laws swiftly and decisively.
