Roman Salanoa to continue hamstring rehabilitation with Munster despite contract expiring

A statement issued by Munster Rugby on Monday said Salanoa was now out of contract but will continue his rehab at the High Performance Centre in Limerick until the end of September, with the hope he will return to action for Nenagh Ormond in Division 1B in the coming season.

Roman Salanoa will be given every chance to resume his professional rugby career as he continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury with Munster, despite his contract expiring this week.

The American-born tighthead prop signed from the Leinster academy in 2020 had not played for Munster since the 2023 URC grand final due to a long-term knee injury.

The 28-year-old former Emerging Ireland tourist had worked his way back to full fitness last season, playing for Nenagh Ormond in the Energia All Ireland League but a scheduled comeback for Clayton McMillan’s provincial side was scuppered at the end of the 2025-26 campaign by the hamstring issue.
A statement issued by Munster Rugby on Monday said Salanoa was now out of contract but will continue his rehab at the High Performance Centre in Limerick until the end of September, with the hope he will return to action for Nenagh Ormond in Division 1B in the coming season.

Yet that hope extends to a potential comeback in the professional ranks once he has proven his fitness to compete at the highest level and that the opportunity arises for the Hawaiian to add to his 30 appearances and two tries for Munster between his October 2020 debut and May 2023.

"Roman is a hugely popular and respected member of our squad who has shown outstanding commitment and resilience throughout a challenging injury period,” Munster Rugby general manager Ian Costello said.

Head coach McMillan welcomed two new senior tightheads among the new faces beginning pre-season training last week, Ireland international Jack Aungier having joined from Connacht while Irish-qualified former England prop Kieran Brookes has joined from Perpignan.

With John Ryan having retired and Oli Jager forced to quit due to concussion issues, the new tightheads will compete with Samoan Michael Ala’alatoa and academy graduate Ronan Foxe for starting places in the Munster front row.

Former Waratahs playmaker Will Harrison and South African hooker Marnus van der Merwe, signed from Scarlets, have also linked up their new team-mates at the Munster HPC where the new-look squad have been getting to know new forwards coach Jimmy Duffy and incoming assistant coach Jared Payne, who is sharing the attack portfolio with Mossy Lawler following the departure of senior coach Mike Prendergast to Bath.

That review is now underway and its independently appointed chair Martin Kelleher issued a first statement on Monday, in which he outlined its remit and emphasised it was not seeking “to attribute blame to individuals”. "

“The Review is forward looking in nature. It is not an investigation, a disciplinary process or a fault-finding exercise, and it does not seek to attribute blame to individuals. Its purpose is to support learning and reform, to strengthen governance, accountability and decision making, and to position Munster Rugby for long term sustainability.

“The Review is the responsibility of the independent Chair, Martin Kelleher, and a Board appointed Steering Group. It is being conducted by The Governance Company, an independent consultancy specialising in corporate governance, led by David W. Duffy.

“The Chair is independent of Munster Rugby and holds no conflict of interest that could compromise objectivity. The Chair and the Steering Group report independently to the Board. The conduct of the Review, its methodology, its evidence and its conclusions are matters for the Chair, the Steering Group and the Reviewer, and not for the executive or management of Munster Rugby.

“While there is understandable interest in this process, a review of this kind is not undertaken in public. It is conducted through evidence, and evidence takes the time it takes. We will not shorten that work to meet a deadline, nor will we let it drift. When we have concluded, we will report our findings and recommendations to the Board. I firmly believe there is an appetite from the Board for change and transformational improvements in the short and longer term and this review will be the foundation for that change”

One gave plenty of scope to voice dissatisfaction. Personally I think the who whole Randle thing was driven by the press , online cranks and ex pros who should have kept it in house.

It was as much as I could do to do one of them, not that I expect it to be any more than pissing in the wind.

The Randle situation was self inflicted, especially considering the IRFU corporate knowledge built up from the Paddy Jackson shitshow, and indeed the Chris Farrell situation. Munster will have learnt nothing if they don't give a full and complete timeline of what occurred, which is what would happen in a professionally run organisation.

Still comes across as sketchy to me I have to say. I hope the man gets to play again but the stink of desperation is unreal. The gaps in information around the timeline is suspect as hell. What happened between his return to action last year and his subsequent disappearance again to picking up a hamstring injury at the end of the season which is now going to continue on into the new season coming.... already it looks like he's going to miss a significant chunk of 26/27 before it has even started. Was he in line to return at the end of last season??

From what I’ve heard it’s been made very straightforward to rebook seats and make sure family and additional tickets are located together. Maybe you’ve missed something?
