The Munster Rugby Thread 24/25

All of these out of contract at the end of the season:

Mark Donnelly
Niall Scannell
John Ryan
Roman Salanoa
Michael Ala'alatoa
Edwin Edogbo
Jack O'Donoghue
Paddy Patterson
Ethan Coughlan
Tony Butler
Thakir Abrahams
Andrew Smith
Diarmuid Kilgallen
Calvin Nash

Ed Ed, a scrummy, Nash and Kilgallen are the only ones I'd keep

Think I'd add JoD to that list too. Big clean out might be coming

I think we will keep him, but I would not. I think we have enough younger, more talented back rows coming and he'd just be blocking them. We have Gleeson, Quinn, Edogbo, Ahern, Coombes, Kendellen and Hodnett.

Same.

Pat Pat can and has played himself into form before. I'd back him as an ideal squad option with a higher ceiling than Coghlan.

Smith might be relatively cheap, though he's another that can't stay fit. But has genuine pace and they'd be losing that with him and Abrahms leaving at the same time.
I don't think McCarthy is ready to step back up again either at the minute

Michael Foy is also a back row option. He's abrasive in the POM style and I think he might make it.

I like JOD but hard choices are required to advance the young guns. I don't see ClayMac moving him on.

PP would depend on how the new Kiwi OH shapes up until the end of season. I dunno how much O Riordan will develop and I'd like to see how Barrett does at OH in the remaining U20 ties. Jury out yet IMO. I think he'll go and Coughlan will be retained but ClayMac was very disappointed with Butler and Coughlan in Glasgow - both hooked 47 mins.

Thaakir needs to something exceptional in Durban and Pretoria - I hope he gets game time. It's difficult to include Kilgallon or Thaakir in 23 when Haley & Daly are fit. Daly is versatile as is Sean O Brien.

I really don't know if Donnelly can get to the required level but same applies to all of our props. I can't see him replace Milne, Loughman or Josh in the medium term. So aside from serious injury I can't see a pathway. I don't like to rule out young players but .......

Quinnie was on RedFM yesterday and said

Niall Scannell will be retiring (presumably to practice his line out throwing).
Jack Aungier deal is done, and he's coming to Munster
Munster still think Salanoa has a future with Munster
Spoke about Coughan needing to improve, but never mentioned Patterson (bear in mind the NZ U20 scrumhalf is coming)

Coughlan is most at risk there I think. Always had questions about his level. Pat Pat has already shown he can play.
Keeping in mind it's tough for any SH in that Munster side just now.

What's the line in the sand with Salanoa though? When do they call it quits? I always think its admirable when clubs ensure players are taken care of rehab wise before leaving but he's back and playing to some extent. Losses will have to be cut at some stage
