The Mercosur Deal

I wasn't paying much attention to this today but it seems Ireland chose the wrong horse to back this time, just one of seven countries to vote against it.

Given how important agriculture is here, that's notable.

Farmers say that they're concerned about public health and the standard of beef, but obviously it's competition that they're actually worried about.

I think I'd still pay the extra few euro for Irish beef even if there was Argentinian stuff available, the quality is just top class.

What boils my piss about this is our so called drive to net zero carbon.

So the logic is here is to cut down the rainforest to feed these cows, ship the meat half way across the world and sell at rock bottom prices. Then export our own beef for maximum profits or increase the prices locally because now it is a premium product.

Ah sure tis democracy. We're not predicting a race meeting at all. Looks like the government can state their position and don't have to sell every EU decision as if they agree 100%.

Look I feel for Irish farmers so the price of steak has gone through the fucking roof.

If this Mercosur caper reduces the price then I'm all for it.

If there was a chance it'd reduce their costs then why are they so against it?

I'd imagine its the prices they can charge that they're more worried about

It won’t reduce the costs to the Irish farmer but may reduce the selling price. I’d imagine farmers are afraid they’ll be the ones to bear the brunt of that.

They knew which way this was gonna go and decided to vote against it to look like they are doing something for the farmers.

Total theatrics
