So the question is should Ireland remain as a neutral country?

For the time being I would say yes (subject to change based on the fast pace of geopolitical changes currently) but we need to increase our defence spending significantly, our army and navy are not fit for purpose and the numbers and capabilities need to be expanded significantly including radar and a proper air force.

At the moment we are not a member of NATO but rely on Britain to protect us, as we have seen with the actions of the US recently in relation to Europe you shouldn't be reliant on another nation for your security. We are not even in NATO so how far down the list would we be for Britain or the US to jump in and protect us if we were attacked. Yes Britain might step up because it would affect their security as well but there might be scenarios where they are not able to.

Worst case scenario is Trump pulls the US out of NATO and all of what that means for European protection. So if you are Putin and have a mind for imperial expansion what do you do? Wait a few years to rearm and then go after Latvia and/or Estonia with their large ethnic Russian populations as the pretext, but maybe keep the Brits busy by going after their defenceless neighbour.

The world is splitting into blocks and if you're not part of one, you'll get eaten.

We were only neutral as an anti British thing and also we were broke and war weary.

A European joint coalition is the only option while the likes of Hungary and Slovenia are in the EU.

The UK and France alone could probably open up a can of whoop ass on the orcs. Then add the eastern Europeans into the mix plus the Ukrainians and you'd have the ring dropped off in Mordor before breakfast.

With what? Ireland has fuck all arms.

The time has come from Ireland to step up.

Joining NATO is pointless, it's dying on the table.

Europe needs help, Ireland can provide if it chooses.

Or it can sit on the sidelines, while others pick up the slack

Would Trump come to their defense if Finland, Poland or the baltics are invaded?

No.

So what then? I'm alright jack?

Speak softly and carry a big stick. Trump is taking Europe's stick away, Pax Americana is finished.

Agreed. We can't stay neutral and expect others to fight for us if Putin goes full Hitler.
