The Hurling Thread

Kiely was always staying on. That Ryder cup gig is just a ceremonial thing. Give the yanks a spiel about hurling and give the European team a lecture on following the process and looking back on reference points.

I was listening to the KCLR hurling podcast tonight and they were discussing the new experimental rules.

One of the speakers mentioned previous rule changes, and claimed that there were a lot of rules brought in by the GAA to stop KK winning All-Irelands.

Does anyone have any idea what he might have been referring to? Because I genuinely don’t have a clue.
I know we all have our biases, and I’d be willing to hear him out if he expanded on it, but unfortunately nobody asked him to and I genuinely can’t think of anything.

The speaker was Eddie Scally who if I’m not mistaken isn’t a KK man, although obviously most of their listeners would be.

I know certain rule changes can suit some teams more than others, but there’s a difference between that and the GAA introducing rule changes to stop a specific team winning like he claimed.
Maybe I’m being too kind to him here by thinking he might just worded his argument badly.

He's a bit of a gobshite imo.He likes to ingratiate himself with KK people by generally dissing Munster hurling. Same old schtick week after week. Michael Walshe is far better than him always objective in his analysis. Think Scally is from Westmeath btw

From 2000 - 2016, they were in 14 finals and won 11 of them. Looks like it worked a treat.
Everyone is aware that they were in more finals previously. His claim was that the GAA introduced a lot of changes specifically to stop Kilkenny from winning.
Maybe he’s right, he claims there were a lot of changes, but I’d like to hear a case been made for even one.

Yeah I like Michael Walsh and Oisin Langan from Waterford is a decent host.
But I wished that one of them asked him to expand on his point.

Austin Gleeson has announced his intercounty retirement.

I’ll repeat what I wrote here previously.. he was one of the most talented hurlers I’ve ever seen. And he showed it more than once against ourselves.

Unfortunately he didn’t make the most of his talent as in my opinion he had all the skills to have been one of the all time greats.
I was hoping there’d be a final kick in him but it wasn’t to be.
It must be a great source of frustration in Waterford that he never rediscovered the form of his early years and is now retired at 31.

It’s hard to believe that after winning an All Star, Hurler of the year and Young hurler of the year in 2016 that he’d win no more awards.
And he has very little silverware to show for it too. Unless they won a league that I’m not remembering.
Although in fairness he played a huge role in them winning minor and U21 All Irelands which not many have done in Waterford.
