So you’re giving 10 weeks to run off all the club championships?
Thats fine in Kilkenny where they treat one code with disdain and get football out of the way by the end of April. How would it work in Cork?

Currently our club championships have an excellent format and are run over 15 weekends, although some grades can go over this if there’s no Munster club deadline (eg Intermediate A). You want to reduce this from 15 weeks down to 10.

For a dual club such as the Barrs. Notwithstanding their Round 1 results, they could well be in a county final in both codes. Thats 12 rounds of matches that you want to run off in 10 weeks. Some player welfare that is.

Your timeline is not allowing for gap weeks to allow players a small recovery.
It’s also not allowing for intercounty players who might have played in an all Ireland final a week off before making them play club championship.

Your suggestion would realistically mean either clubs or players could only play one code. I realise that’s the way it’s gone for intercounty players, but it would be a sad day where a club player who wishes to play both codes would only be able to play one.

In my opinion too many people talk about championship calendars and only see what would suit them personally.
My playing days are over and I’m not currently involved with any teams in my club. So it would suit me just fine if the intercounty was extended by another month.
But I would prioritise the opinion and welfare of 1 player over that of 100 supporters such as myself.

Nobody who proposes extending the inter-county season has come up with a workable solution for clubs. I just tune out now when I see it mentioned.

I would challenge the point that the Munster championship works. I’m not sure you can say a competition works when the main objective to just finish 3rd of fifth. Actually making the final and winning it is a very distant secondary concern.

Of all the formats used, I would argue it is the best, straight knock out teams had potentially one game and gone, the back door again potentially only 2 games and gone. Now teams are guaranteed a minimum of 4 games. The issue now is all the games are on the same weekend so you don't get the same build up, but that can't be helped once it was decided to give the club player an even break.

I would keep the same format but move everything by 4 weeks. The club and county with have the same amounts of week as they do now but everything shifts by 4 weeks.

That’s something I’ve been thinking over, as I do firmly believe the intercounty season should go into the middle of August, and critical season ending games for championship contenders shouldn’t be happening in April.

The way I would do it is leave the football where it is and flip hurling three weeks forward - so the final would be next Sunday in other words.

The real impact of that would be inconsequential in about 24 counties where football is king and/or there is no realistic prospect of their County featuring in the hurling final and so can play accordingly.

There are a few counties that are predominantly hurling who treat football as a second status, often playing it during the summer. I think all could plan to start their championship the week following the all Ireland hurling final and still have a really comfortable window for club championship.

Then there’s a handful of larger counties like Cork, Galway and Dublin (and Wexford?) who are proper dual counties with a decent chance of ending up in AI hurling and/or football final. For me, those Counties should almost be treated as provinces when it comes to club intercounty competitions, and should be provide with another 2 weeks at least to run their competitions. The club intercounty format is one that could easily be distilled and restructured, especially for hurling, including a move away from provincials.

Kerry and Limerick have been given a bye in the Munster championships for example, which I think is a fucking joke given both place their emphasis firmly on only one code.

By the way - I am a club player, though very much at the later and lower level tier of things. Club players are more concerned about having clarity over fixtures and not having repeated absurd delays to club championship starting into October dependent on how the intercounty season goes. Starting in the middle and of August rather last week of July is a bit of a non issue, whereas the positive impact of the intercounty final being a few weeks later would be enormous.

On the flip side, there should be no intercounty matches until mid February. The football incounty season needs a good trimming, with leagues pulled back to smaller groups with less games. The leagues need to be de emphasised in importance too with the link of league standing and Sam Maguire/Tailteann Cup removed.

I do think the hurling championship needs to follow football in going with a separate All Ireland and Provincial format. The jeopardy of the Munster championship is amazing, but isn’t worth the canyon in activity that follows it which is harming the overall year.

Are you ok with All Ireland club semi finals being played on Christmas week?

if there is a push for a round robin all ireland series it is possible that you could play the provincial championships in April as a knockout competition with the 4 provincial finalists qualifying for a new super 8s all ireland championship in june where they would be joined by 4 backdoor qualifiers

On the club game, under no circumstances should their current season be pushed back to suit the inter county season
