The Hurling Thread

Don't bother, it's plain and simple begrudgery
I don't think it is as simple as that.

I have great admiration for his contribution to the GAA and for his other charitable work. I would rather though that he either paid his taxes here, or he lived somewhere else if he chooses to pay his taxes there. It seems unfair to me that he has the benefits of being an Irish citizen without making any contribution to the state.

If it were up to me, I would considerably tighten the number of days someone could live here while still maintaining that they reside somewhere else for tax reasons.

I can't fault him for making use of the law, but I don't admire him for it either.

What benefits?

An Irish passport?...still entitles him to live wherever he likes

He's made a pretty large contribution to the lives of the people the over 100 million his charity has given over the years.

Maybe he should donate fuck all, might be more thought of him

He gets to be considered a great fella altogether for the GAA, rather than a tax avoider, for a start ;-)

I would consider that a pretty great benefit.

This isn't particularly an anti JP stance, though I get that you see it as personal. I just don't think that anyone should be allowed to do what he is doing. It is easy to be a philanthropist when you don't pay your taxes. I would rather he be subject to the same tax laws as the rest of us, rather than getting to pick and choose what charities he gives money to.

And yes, of course he could choose to not give any money to anyone. As I already said, it is admirable that he chooses to support certain charities and other organisations. I would just find it more admirable if he paid his taxes instead.

Oh wow, that's a huge benefit altogether.....so...no benefits then.

Not personal at all, I abhor the idea that one private citizen has the cheek to tell another private citizen what they should do or where they should live.

He is subject to the tax laws of the jurisdiction where he resides

It's a pretty big benefit. It is a type of greenwashing. It offers cover for the fact that he is a tax avoider.

I haven't told him either. I have just said that I don't respect his decision. I doubt my opinion bothers him much!

He absolutely is. That is why I referred to it as tax avoidance and not tax evasion. I never suggested that he was breaking any laws.

Greenwashing?...I wouldn't even dignify that with a comment

How can he be a tax avoider when he isn't resident in Ireland?

I'm not resident, does that mean I'm a tax avoider too?

He is non resident for tax reasons. That is tax avoidance, which is absolutely legal.

You seem to be getting very upset about this. That isn't my intention. On a personal level I am sure he is a lovely man, and as a Limerick supporter of course you feel protective of him, but I fundamentally disagree with what he is doing, and if it were within my power I would make what he is doing illegal.

Don't worry though, it won't be outlawed any time soon ;-)

No Matty...don't reduce it to a personal attack, that is beneath you and as a lawyer I'm sure you can debate without doing so

It's about the fundamental right of a private citizen to live where they choose

Of course he's done a lot for Limerick hurling but I haven't seen him tog out for a game

I am not reducing it to a personal attack, in fact I was trying to do the exact opposite.

It isn't him I have an issue with so much as the system that allows him to do something that I consider wrong.
