The Hurling Thread

Tough for Waterford. They've come close in so many of their matches. Pity to see them relegated.

I'd have loved to have seen a Tipp Kilkenny relegation battle too, tbh!
Yes, that is Waterford relegated now. Even if Kilkenny lose to Tipp next week, Kilkenny already beat Waterford so have them on a head-to-head. Waterford showed very well v Limerick, Kilkenny and Tipp but looked well off the pace v Cork and Galway then. They still won't be easy in Walsh Park, far from it, but you'd still be surprised if they get out of Munster.

Some strange decisions by ref mostly against Waterford. Tipp's backs battened down the hatches in the second half. Some great last ditch tackles.

I'd agree on the ref. I thought Waterford got a raw deal off him. Gave them absolutely nothing of the 50/50 calls.

Waterfords biggest issue remains lack of depth. They have 12 or 13 hurlers that are absolutely outstanding but beyond that there is a noticeable drop off in quality. I still think they'll get 1 if not 2 results in Munster to really put a spanner in the works. O Halloran is an outstanding freetaker. Potential to be the best free taker in the country from what I've seen of him. Strange decision to put Stephen Bennett back on the frees v Kilkenny and it's probably cost them their place in Division 1A now as a result. Is there a warning there for us going forward regarding freetaking.

Just a word on Shane Bennett at wing back. Hes putting up huge tallies in games for a half back. He will take serious watching in Walsh Park. The flip side is hes a bit loose defensively. Something we really need to exploit.

No team has 12 or 13 outstanding hurlers; 5 or 6 at most, and hope that the rest become greater than the sum of their parts on any given day. Waterford's problem is they have practically no player that would make any other team in the country - maybe Hutchinson at a pinch. There's a fairly serious ack of quality throughout their squad and they don't appear to have benefitted from superior coaching or have much of a game plan either. I fear another barren year awaits.

And they have a load of midfielders/half backs who can score from distance but can’t defend.

Even Dessie struggles up front come championship.

Can’t agree with your statement though, Stephen Bennett is one of the top 5 current forwards in Ireland because he has no supporting cast around him.

He would walk onto any team.

Waterford didn’t even make it out of Munster in 2025 and he still scored 4-33, ridiculous hurler.

They have a lot of hurlers who can do really good things but then hit a terrible wide, like jack prendergast yesterday. Just feel you can't be sure they'll be consistently good like a Limerick or cork player.
Still think they'll be really hard to beat in walsh park, and could rattle clare first day out.
