The Hurling Thread

Just listening to the commentary of the 1990 football final. I was a little more than 1 at the time.

I can only imagine what the double was like to live through. It must have been incredible.
My school was in the sciath na scol football final that year. All the schools in the finals had their photo taken with both cups, savage photo to have

Probably didn't even fully appreciate it at the time. Cork had won the hurling in 84,86 the football in 89 and were regularly getting to both finals. So I probably thought the double would happen another few times

I was at that final, a limerickman supporting cork , different times back then none of the toxic social media etc but yeah ye were 🤣but it was a brilliant achievement and especially for teddy mccarthy .
Always remember we were 1 ticket short and met a father and son from milford trying to sell a ticket for over cost price. I knew milford then well at the time and started asking him did he know such and such a person , wait until I tell em you're a tout 😉. Got it for cost price and then gave him money for 2 pints. great days back then, seems like another lifetime now.
As an aside did cork or gaa ever give Dennis Walsh a medal for 1990 football , unused subs i think didnt get medals those days
Bar 2012 replay and 2020 I’ve been at every All Ireland Hurling Final since 2012. Aside from seeing Cork win in 2005 and 2010, I rank Limerick winning in 2018 as one of the best days I’ve ever had in Croke Park.

I was surrounded by Limerick people and when the final whistle blew I ended up in a bear hug with two of them and a 3rd turned around to me and seeing me in my Cork jersey said that Cork people were a credit to the county for how they handled losing the semi final that year. I’d a tear in my eye to be honest.

Long story short, fuck social media and online commentary. The vast majority of GAA people and supporters from all counties are great people and mix extremely well.

I was a little more than one at the time! I was in the little wheelchair section at the corner of the Nally Stand with my brother.
We had great views of the Cork goals flying in during the second half.

Most Cork fans were depressed at half time as Galway had run up a sizeable lead

At the end, I just ran onto the pitch like a madman and then remembered that I'd left the brother behind in his wheelchair!

Unlike the hurling final, the football was played on an overcast, heavy day and the tension was terrible. It was a poor game, with a lot of rancour already built up between us and Meath by then. It was an endurance test, to be honest.

I can't remember if that was the day another one of my brothers was nearly brained by a feral scut who chucked a rock at our train on the way home...

The past isn't all perfect!

2001 down The Park. The Rock's legendary shoulder and point, but ye beat us (by a point, I think).
A few of us ended up in the City End , which was 90% Green!
At the final whistle, this big Limerick fella picked up my friend ( who weighed about as much as a pillow at the time), and, ecstatic, roared:"We bate 'em, we bate 'em!!". My friend politely replied:"I'm one of them", and the Limerick lad put him down, apologised profusely, and went off dancing.
(Un)happy memories!!!
