The Hurling Thread

Officially retired means being given the opportunity to jump before being pushed. Giles is gone 10 years but for my money was still the best in the business at the time. Regardless, his age shouldn’t come into it. These ‘right on’ people are mad for diversity, except when it comes to age.

I dunno there comes a point when all pundits stop watching any games they're not paid to watch and start recycling the same old soundbites.

It's a hard thing but there should be consistent enough churn in these things. And there is still too much "show us your medals" journalists are often the best pundits. I'd also like to see more coaches involved.

Giles was good becuae he used to try and teach us a bit about the game. That is the goal don't assume.the audience are ignorant but teach them something they may not see by themselves

Totally agree. Fwiw, I thought Giles, who was one of the best in his day, ran out of new insights long before his retirement. It's almost inevitable tbh.

I remember listening to an episode of The Stand at the start of Pep's second season at City, it was Dunphy and a couple of the other fellas from The Good Old Days - it was cringeworthy, not just because they got it so wrong (Pep had been 'found out', apparently) but because the level of discussion was just one lazy cliché after another.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike TSG (for starters it tries to do way too much in a single show) but let's not pretend that bringing back the pundits from years gone by is the solution.
