The Hurling Thread

Kildare are an interesting one .big catchment area as commuter belt from Dublin. Thriving underage club scene, Naas club is huge and some of their underage teams at u12 are competing in competition level in kilkenny.
People discount it happening but look at the offaly team in the 80's driven by Birr contingent primarily and from a much smaller base.
its not that much of a stretch to think that kildare in time with the right structures and development could be up playing at top level and competing .I think they are one to watch and they should harness the desire in the gaa to grow the game of hurling.
Speaking of offaly met Brian whelahan in his pub in birr late last year , told him they
broke our heart in 94 he was laughing remembering those days saying long time ago now. My god he was a great hurler, still involved training the youngsters in birr looks as fit as a fiddle god be good to him.
The GAA should be pouring money into Kildare hurling. The ceiling for it is very high when you consider population and a lot originally from outside Kildare. Loads of GDAs, get trainers into schools, encourage new clubs to start and try to bring other clubs up to challenge Naas. The population is there. With proper investment we could have them up in 1A.

New RTE head of sport - Declan McBennett - came in and cleaned them all out. Did the same across other sports, cleared out Giles and Dunphy in the soccer, Hook et al in the rugger. White middle aged men were purged 😆. We are much the poorer without them.
Tbf hook and loughnanne officially retired from tv punditry. Brent pope was screwed over and he has publicly said it. Giles is like 85 and dunphy 80 so to bow out in 2018 is probably about right.

Yes good point Dagda. I would argue that they should be pouring money into the likes of Cork city esp. the north side . It is almost a hurling wasteland. This is not a criticism of the clubs btw, more so the administrators. Schools hurling needs serious attention. To keep a game strong you need to keep the engine strong, ie cork, Tipp, lim, Galway and KK, especially where you have large urban populations.

Officially retired means being given the opportunity to jump before being pushed. Giles is gone 10 years but for my money was still the best in the business at the time. Regardless, his age shouldn’t come into it. These ‘right on’ people are mad for diversity, except when it comes to age.

I thought it watching a bit of the game last night, and again the highlights tonight...but anyone think the bas on Carlow keepers hurley looked a bit small by modern standards?
