The Hurling Thread

Ref missed some blatant throws by BG players in the last few mins, one of them directly lead to a score. He definitely gave the big calls in their favour late on.

Good game. 2 pretty strong teams. NAP had some desperate wides, particularly from frees. Downes had a rough day.
I don’t think over ever seen so many throws let go!

Posted this in the DJ Carey thread but maybe I should have posted it here instead.

Looking back on that time now isn't it mad the narrative that was spun about how different the Cork and Kilkenny teams of the noughties were. The Cork team were seen as media whores, Donal Og and Sean Og continously seen as courting controversy by pushing the GPA and Cork seen as agitators and maybe there was some truth to it.

But looking at footage of DJ Carey presenting No Frontiers last night in 2004 while still a player for Brian Cody was absolutely mind boggling and I can't believe we all forgot that 😂😂 he had sponsorship with Puma, McCoys crisps. Henry Shefflin had high profile ads with Lucosade and Energise as well as a controversial advert that was pulled with red bull.

We were always fed this narrative by the media that Cody's teams were holier then thou and everything was about hurling and hurling only and Cody wouldn't tolerate anyone putting their head above the parapet whereas the truth is his Kilkenny players courted the GPA and media attention every bit as much as the any other team.

Also one last point. There has been rumours doing the rounds about Carey in the hurling world with well over a decade or 15 years. If someone like me, down in Cork was hearing them despite some people in Kilkenny closing ranks and brushing it under the carpet then the Kilkenny County board and Brian Cody were definitely after hearing them. With that in mind wasn't it a very strange decision for Kilkenny to bring Carey in as their U21 manager in 2018 and 2019 and for Cody to ask him to be a selector in 2020 for the seniors.

Not for one moment insinuating there was any wrongdoing on their part, just saying it's incredible how much they had their heads buried in the sand.

GPA also with big questions to answer giving him €30k. Would seriously want to be a proper independent review into that

Would agree with the first chunk of that, the stepford wives narrative as Donal Og called it. More of that Kilkenny team have gone on be media whores compared to Cork as well.

On DJ getting involved with teams - I don't know, we've had lads involved with Cork teams in recent years with plenty of questions over their personal lives as well.

John Fogerty has a good piece calling out the over the €30 GPA, and how it will be a major part of negotiations with that GAA on oversight of their spending. Was Paul Flynn in charge when that happened??
