The Hurling Thread

Very petty also makes little sense unless there was something else going on (it actually would have been in Kilkenny's interest to have Shefflin cut his teeth as an intercounty manager in a top county like Galway), tells you a lot about type of person Cody is.
Not at all, Cody is a gentleman. Himself and Shefflin never had a superb relationship, try reading Shefflins and Codys books. Was there animosity between them when he took the Galway job, yes of course, what Kilkenny man would be falling all over a Kilkenny man coaching a team to beat his own county team? The respect is gone. JBM has the exact same attitude.
I would be of the exact same mindset, you don't coach a team to beat your own county unless you are a hurling mercenary, we've have a few of our own as well.

Time moved on I guess for Cody and shefflin, shefflin alluded to his own disappointment nearing end of his career and the 2012 all ireland where he got a minimal role.
Lack of communication from Cody to him also ,maybe as one of the greats he expected more but I'd guess that's what made Cody so ruthless ,he could see it was time for someone else.

Re coaching outside the county against your own ,eamonn Cregan was hardly a hurling mercenary when he coached offaly to beat limerick in 94 ,indeed he often says it broke his heart at the time but it was his role as coach to do just that.

One example from 30 years ago, there are probably over half a dozen or more to confirm my comment

I'd instance 2 cork men who managed Limerick donal o grady and John Allen, neither of which I'd call hurling mercenaries, indeed no money would compensate them for dealing with the internal strife etc with limerick hurling during their tenures.
Maybe Davy Fitz if anyone fits the profile you allude to. How many counties really ever have a shot at winning an all Ireland ,I'd say 8 and that's about it.
That doesent leave a lot of options for players who really fancy coaching and while doing so have a real chance of making a difference and maybe winning something.

You'd swear they're the first group that ever had a few lads fall out with each other.

Players and managers with far worse beef have managed to turn up at these things.

At the top level you’ve had dozens of managers and players who’ve had very strained relationships even during playing days.. nothing new.. Henry, Joe, Eoin Kelly etc
