The Hurling Thread

It seems to me like the modern GAA fan believes that simulataneously the players are better prepared and more professionally organised than ever before but what some old timers say on podcasts or the media is a key determinant of success.

For Gods sake it doesn't matter a fuck lads. Players do not need to know what Babs or anyone says to be up for an All Ireland final.

Very true.
Babs Keating me arse. Half the Cork team would hardly know who is he ffs.

But as I’m sure you’d be aware, there will be “old timers” brought in around the camp for a word of support, as you derogatorily referred to em. Do not underestimate heritage, culture and tradition.

The 2018 U21 final is going to be referenced a fair bit, understandably so. Worth bearing in mind that Cork played Tipp in two de facto knock-out games, in 2022 and 2024 (both Munster round-robin games, but in each case the loser was eliminated). Cork won both games handsomely. Point being that the recent history between these two sets of players goes both ways. 2018 is a good example for Tipp of what they can do if they get their attitude and set-up right. It's a warning to Cork for pretty much the opposite reason. Beyond that, it will have little importance imo.

Plenty of the Cork players weren't even born when Babs was the catalyst for Offaly's last AI...

Lads, we are doing this, 100%. Now, if most of ye weren't such freeloaders, GM would leave a quart behind the bar with his winnings for all 7 of ye and Matlock. Yermon is a notable exception but some would argue, he's had his fill already.
🤷‍♂️ Can you try that again, this time in English please.

If you find old timers a derogatory term that's on you not anyone else. Don't project.

It's great really.
It's been sold as a great novelty but in reality it's the latest installment in knock out hurling between the two oldest rivals in the game.
The history is littered with stories of underdog success, controversial events, unlikely hero's and likely ones.
It's a mixture of dislike and begrudging respect we have for each other because each county has downed the other and ended their journey countless times in the past and it's the past we've been brought back to with this match up. You can't help remembering all the matches and characters from the past even if they will have no bearing on this match.

Im looking forward to up to the match this year not to mind the banter with the Tipp fans before the match.
