The Hurling Thread

On the other hand Limerick have the problem of closing down Barrett, Fitzgibbon, Hayes , Connolly and probably Harnedy, not even mentioning Horgan.

I don't see an advantage for Limerick in that respect.

I think both counties have problems to solve regarding the opposition, Limerick have shown themselves to be proven winners albeit some players would appear to be in decline.

Cork would appear to be an improving team but still not won Munster or All Irelands.
How many of our forwards were replaced against Clare.?

Pat Ryan admitted afterwards they made mistakes with the substitutions.
Barrett was sent off,
Connolly taken off probably to prevent a red card.
Harnedy was possibly the poorest of the forwards on the day but we saw what he can do against Tipp.
Fitzgibbon was taken out of the forwards and , mistakenly in my opinion, moved further back.
Hayes finished the game.

Not sure anyone, with one exception was taken off because they were poor. They certainly were not poor in the first half .

It was a bad day at the office for management. I said at the time that it was great point we got in Ennis. Injury time was up when Clare went a point up. They thought, they had won the game. They were in absolute disbelief when we drew level. The amount of boos from the Clare fans at the final whistle spoke volumes. This time last year, we had 0 points, now we have 3. That's progress.

The worrying thing for me is that the management in my opinion had a bad day at the office with regards substitutions during last years All Ireland final as well.

Now I know the red card for Barrett completely skewed that game for Clare in Ennis but I think any of us that followed Cork closely during the league raised our eyebrows when we saw Shane Kingston and young Duds Healy being introduced into a pig of a second half that day. We all know Kingston isn't suited to those kind of dogfights and I thought it was a bit unfair on Healy at 20 to be brought on at that time in that environment against the All Ireland champions for his championship debut.

I'd be hoping for much better judgement going forward from management. Flip side of that is that the subs need to be mentally prepared to come into these red hot cauldrons as well. For all my criticism of the management there really is nothing Pat Ryan or the lads on the line can do if Kingston fumbles a handy ball, Jack O C misses a sitter of a point or Ger Millerick pushes his man in the back etc. The lads are all serious hurlers they need to be clued in whether starting or not.
