The Hurling Thread

You cannot compare eras. Different styles different views. Memories blurred. It is also not fair on the current crop of hurlers to assert how much better it was in our day. As if it was somehow tougher. I think the modern player with all the conditioning hits harder than before and the speed of players means a lot also in terms of how tough you have to be to withstand a hit or a belt. I think in fairness any of the 70s players who are involved in coaching would probably back this up . John Gah and Sean Og would be interesting to listen to to compare their era to the recent heartbreak that they were on the sideline for. Was that a classic ?

Best hurlers are today’s ones. Imagine Christy ring trying to keep up with Kyle Hayes. Ring was only 5 foot 6 and Hayes is a foot taller. One big shoulder from Hayes and Ring would be on his arse. Any high ball falling between them would be fielded by Hayes. Hayes would leave him for dead for pace as well. If he was playing today he would be getting the curly finger to come off after 20 minutes. Also rings Hurley would be too narrow compared to the wide bas of today.

Poor Kyle can’t keep up with Deccie Dalton never mind Christy Ring 😀😀😀

Ya because if Ring was around today he'd still be using a branch of a tree for a hurley, still be driving a coal truck and wouldn't be bothered his hole doing S&C.
By contrast if Kyle Hayes was back in the 40s he'd probably be in a borstal.
