The Gaslight Anthem

There used to be a few fans on here so... The Gaslight Anthem are playing The Olympia in Dublin on Friday 29th March 2024.

They put on great shows in their heyday around "The 59 Sound" but Brian Fallon's voice, in live situations at least, seems to be absolutely blown out these days. It was fading a decade ago. Can't see myself travelling to Dublin for this gig. Would probably still go to a Cork show though.

Their first 3 albums are still belters. Diminishing returns after that. The new single "History Books" with Bruce Springsteen on guest vocals is pretty poor.

Fallon's solo record "Local Honey" was very good though.

Brian Fallons new solo album out today

Fallon has turned into a bit of a strange character.

I've read that some people are putting it down to anti-depressants (and the weight gain would support that) but he seems to be acting slightly erratically.

He was always heavy on the Christianity - even back in the early Gaslight Anthem days but, of late, he has been doubling down on it - covered up all of his tattoos in a bout of religious fervor. Along with getting drunk during performances, forgetting lyrics/chords and going on incoherent rambles between songs.

I hope he can turn things around because he was a tremendous wordsmith and I still play "The 59 Sound" regularly. I just picked up a vinyl copy of it the other day in London.

He has Nathaniel Murphy (from Manchester via Mayo) on guitar for the album tour. That lad is a serious player.
