The Gaelic Football Thread

Whatever about the last free the camera angle for the square ball goal was so obvious the full forward was in the square well before the ball was kicked, but as we all know kerry goals are never disallowed.

Why did they change the hooter system to this years one. I thought the one they had was working fine
I didn't hear that part of the program last night.

I expect the reason was that if the game was close and a team needed a score to draw or to win, and wanted to deny the opposition an opportunity to score afterwards, then they would play keep-ball from a few minutes out to run the clock down until the hooter blew, and would only then try to actually engineer a score - knowing that they have plenty of time to do so at that point. The keep-ball was extremely frustrating for both the opposition players, and sleep-inducing for the match spectators.

With the change, the team in possession can't take that risk - or at least not as much. If they play keep ball until 20 seconds before the hooter goes, they might not get a good scoring opportunity within those 20 seconds. If they attack earlier, they may score too soon and then the other team will have an opportunity to kick out and get the ball down the field for a score of their own.

It is going to get very messy.

It's a once-off shot-clock - you have until the hooter sounds to get your shot off, after which the game is over. Yeah, there will be mistakes in reffing - but there are many other mistakes in reffing, in this sport and in all others, and those mistakes often impact the result.

Media sell advertising. Everybody on TV stations or writing in newspapers are paid. They have to attract audiences/readers to fund their payments - so they need to hype up controversy - in such circumstances messiness is a guarantee. We'll be fine. That said, perhaps someone can come up with a better idea (perhaps it being in the head of the ref and the players and the rest of us guessing as to when he'll blow it was better - it's arguable, though I'm not so sure).

UCC 3-16 DCU 1-20 tonight.
11 Corkmen and 4 Kerrymen
Jacob O Driscoll, Michael McSweeney, Colin Mulloy and Conor Daly
all played well and commentator from Armagh gave McSweeney and Daly high praise.
4 Clon men on the team, so expect Fox to give us a match report,
They all played well, but Jacob O Driscoll at No 3 was outstanding and even scored a brilliant goal after scorching through a lot of bodies from mid field before shooting high into the net from distance.

Jacob may well be the answer to our Mo 6 problem by filling the No4 jersey and releasing Tommy Walsh to No6.
Was there v Limerick and Kerry in the recent McGrath cup and kept Clifford quite enough.

Noticed in the Roscommon - Mayo match both goalies were made wear pink high vis tops.

A small thing, but proper order. If goalies are now coming out into open play joining the attack, they shouldn’t be in a black kit similar to the ref.
