The Gaelic Football Thread

yeah he had loads of offers I'd say. certainty coming out of Minor in 2017/2018 sure how far they ever got.

For some lads Oz would be the adventure of a lifetime..For others it'd be a nightmare to be away from home and all.the rest of it. Takes all sorts like.

ciarán kilkenny was there for a bit and had a massive open letter cry wank about how much he missed home and packed it in.

then zach tuohy had a huge career over there. tbf, being called zach probably helped fit in with the aussies.

i think the argument about compensation is null and void. if the aussies stumped up €50k or similar where would it go? most likely hq and the club involved wouldn’t see much of it. the gaa would be very good at tugging at the heart strings when it’s needed.

The long-term future of the GAA doesn't look great when you look at some of the data. Nine counties in the Republic had less than 1,000 births in 2024.

You're bang on target there @Ogre Moran.

With the falling (dare I say plummeting) birth rate, the future of this country depends on immigrants and how well we all integrate from first, second, and third generations. And we'll need them in the GAA too. And to be honest the GAA can do a lot to make the wider integration a success, so it's a two-way street. It's not going to solve all of the problem you raise Ogre, especially in very rural areas - but we should at least exploit that opportunity better than we are doing (tradition won't be enough, and I know it's not easy).

All I'm saying is that the Gaa should be taking advantage of the fact that the Aussies are very keen on Gaelic footballers playing their sport. They should use whatever clout they have to benefit from this. If they don't succeed well and good but trying to make a case that they shouldn't because one is amateur and the other isn't or that they are different organisations is irrelevant.

There is absolutely no mechanism to formalise a gaa deal with the AFL that makes sense and doesnt involve contracts
