The Gaelic Football Thread

All I'm saying is that the Gaa should be taking advantage of the fact that the Aussies are very keen on Gaelic footballers playing their sport. They should use whatever clout they have to benefit from this. If they don't succeed well and good but trying to make a case that they shouldn't because one is amateur and the other isn't or that they are different organisations is irrelevant.
Again that's grand. Irrelevant is certainly not a word I would use. I think its very much relevant.

If I remember there was talks between the AfL and the GAA to prevent tapping youngsters and maybe set roster limits but what actual leverage do the GAA have?

They may want to keep a good relationship with the AFL and avoid bad press when some young fella heads over and it doesn't work out and he goes on the media talking about loneliness and how he had no support.

Do you really think the GAA don't already use the kind of influence you're describing on players?

They were sniffing around Clifford a few years ago but he's still here.

Plenty of stories knocking around about handy jobs or sorting accommodation or whatever .

But ultimately what can the GAA do other than ask nicely and make it hard for Tadgh Keneally or whoever to hold a combine.

The AfL would argue that the development a player gets only starts when they arrive they go on rookie contracts to regional teams and the S&C boys get to work. When Marty Clarke or Mark Keane come back should the down or Cork County boards compensate them for all the development work they've done?

Even if you make a deal with the AFL some latter day Ricky Nixon character can just book UL for a day, hold a combine and offer players spots in semi pro regional sides in Oz from where the AFL clubs can have their pick.

And if the GAA really want to stop a player from going. If they pay his rent under the table and sort him with job driving the Guinness van and he still wants to go what can they actually do?

Wasn’t Clifford all set to go to Australia, reported in the media and all, but changed his mind at the last minute?

yeah he had loads of offers I'd say. certainty coming out of Minor in 2017/2018 sure how far they ever got.

For some lads Oz would be the adventure of a lifetime..For others it'd be a nightmare to be away from home and all.the rest of it. Takes all sorts like.

IIRC I’d say he could have had a contract signed. Thought he was very close to going but then at the last minute put out a statement saying that he was staying in Kerry

Lads, the concept of any unit of the GAA receiving a payment to release a player to a non-GAA sport is illogical - our players are volunteers.

What the GAA could do is form a small panel involving players:
  • who went before and were successful in the sport there and were happy with their decision.
  • who went before and were not successful in the sport there and who regretted their decision.
  • who could have gone before and didn't, and were happy with their decision.
  • who could have gone before and didn't, and regretted their decision.
I would say that in the GAA we have a massive number of players who could have gone before and didn't (e.g. highly capable players who never even bothered with Aussie trials).

This panel to be available via a chairperson for consultation in respect of a player considering their options, consultation by a player and any nominee of the player (and by their parents/guardians if they are still a child). And available for consultation afterwards too.

The AFL and the AFL recruiters can hardly be said to be primarily motivated by what is in the best interests of the player - they are paid recruiters for what are in effect showbusiness companies. What the GAA can offer to the player, and their parents/guardians where applicable, is some assistance in making such a big decision at a young age, and assistance afterwards after the decision is made.

Now of course I'm sure that in many cases this kind of thing happens informally anyway on a case by case basis - but let's have something structured in place in advance and ready for players and their parents/guardians.

Of course I am just throwing out that suggestion. The kinds of players I mention who have made the decision before would probably suggest something better than I am suggesting.

That is the crux of the argument that O Se was making two days ago on the radio. They knew there was offers being made to Clifford and got out in front and convinced him to stay.
How the one the other day, they knew nothing till the deal was done. His complaint was the cloak and dagger nature of it .

That is a legit complaint Maurice Brosnan in the examiner was talking about having a code of conduct for the scouts. That at least should be done.

Also appointment of an Irish Liason officer by the AFLPA as a point of contact
