The origins of the song are subject to debate. The modern version was recorded by Seán Ó Sé in 1962, hence perhaps why the GAA chose to use it today. Dónal Ó Mulláin from Cúl Aodha is reputed to have composed the song in 1940, but it's origins are in the story of the Puck goat who warned the people of Killorglin of an imminent attack by Cromwell, and whose deeds are commemorated in Puck Fair each year, so there is (partly) a Kerry connection.
