Mine are straight forward and Im going to stick to people Ive seen and witnessed in the flesh since nothing beats the player that the atmosphere changes for when they get the ball.. people know they are special and anything is possible.. the surge through the blood, the hairs standing on the neck and you have to be there to get that sense

JBM - for club and county, an inspirational player but a magic hurler.. and pulled the county together as manager when the deepest rift opened because everyone can't help but respect the guy

Teddy Mac - won the double in the most important position for both codes, never to be repeated again, and a heart like a warrior

Brian Corcoran - Probably the most gifted hurler I have witnessed, apart from JBM. Multiple positions, multiple all stars.. he had it all

The Rock - not the most gifted, not the biggest medal haul, but dominated a position like few can and if ever there was a man to rouse the crowd with a big catch and clearance, or a shoulder to put an opponent into next week it was him.. points off his knees, points from inside his own half when no-one else could.. the ultimate gladiator for me

Roy - the fella everyone loved to hate but what an inspiration on the pitch - set the tone for everything we did. Roy vs Holland.. minute no 1

Davy Barry - an absolute genius with the ball in either code, and scored that belter against Bayern with Effenberg wondering what was happening

JBM a gifted hurler? A supreme opportunist but gifted as in Corcoran R, Cashman, Gerald McCarthy. Ben O'Connor, etc? .....no.

He was a better footballer.

Langton phoned me once about 30 years ago to say he had registered a player I wanted. These were the early days of mobile phones.

I answered it with' "alright John howz it going" and he laughed.

I remember reading something about him giving interviews in London pubs for a few halves of lager.
Back in those days a lot of famous sports people lost everything.

Met him in London on a number of occassions in a pub called the Duke of Kendal just off the Edgeware Road, too many stories to go in to here,suffice to say he was not pleasant when he had too much to drink.

Don't forget Pat O Callaghan from Castlemagner/Banteer who won 2 gold medals for the hammer in 2 different Olympics Amsterdam in 1928 and Los Angeles in 1932.The only Irish athlete ever to do so in track and field.

Abit beyond the bounds of this (ancient) thread but 7 of the first 8 Olympic golds in the hammer were won by people born in north cork, tipp and limerick. The others beside Pat represented the US.
