Imagine if Dáil proceedings were held in private with only TDs and employees of the executive present, and a bulletin was issued after each sitting, and we had to ask our TDs for any extra information as to what went on. 'Twould be grand at the beginning. But over time there'd be all sorts of story-passing, rumour, etc - some fella would be saying in the pub that he heard from a fella who heard from a fella, whose brother was there, that this or that was said or decided, or not said or not decided, that some TD took some position or some TD had failed to take some position.Moynihan is only sour that he hasn't the same inside access as before
In a very large democratic organization, there's a pretty strong case to be made that these kinds of sittings should ordinarily be to some extent public - and admitting the press helps with that.
