Dublin City Council has spent up to €150,000 more per home to build social housing compared to private developers, a new audit of development costs has revealed.
The review showed that the local authorities' costs to deliver one- and two-bedroom homes are between 11 per cent and 44 per cent higher than the private sector.
We have populist politicians in the Dail telling us that the State can simply build all these houses, much cheaper, better and quicker.
Private Developers work to a budget and construction timeline (the amount that they can borrow from a Bank etc to fund the works) while the public sector has an open cheque book of taxpayers cash and sure if they cannot get the houses finished this year sometime next year might do.
