I've three things that I'd count as essential if we do have kids -

Own a house, because we can't be raising a child in a tiny one bed apartment

Get a proper health check, so the child isn't born as a raging alcoholic

And tbh I don't think I'd ever be happy having just one child. I don't want us to both die and leave an orphan. If I have one child, I want them to have a sibling who they can lean on.

But like all of this is so dependent on economic circumstances. And things like climate change - do I want to bring a child into the world when they could be faced with climate catastrophe?
