Bertie at one point was unable to secure a tax clearance cert and no one of signed mind believed his tribunal diatribe about winning money on horses as Celia Larkin walked around Dublin with bags of cash. The idea of a minister for finance not having a bank account is fanciful to say the least.

I was always fascinated by that, if Bertie didn't operate a bank account between 87 and 93 as he stated, how come the tribunal couldn't find one to disprove him.

A tax clearance certificate simply means that you have paid taxes on an amount of income you specify. It does not mean that you are actually tax compliant if you have omittted further income or gifts in that period

But the amount of money he received from his buddies was in the public domain. To the best of my knowledge he was never accused of underpaying tax.

Did he lie to the tribunal? Yes. Did he receive corrupt payments? Highly likely that he did. Was he a tax cheat? Doubtful.
