'take your stupid Irishness' elsewhere

A working holidaymaker who partied too hard on his birthday weekend has been banned from an Irish pub and told to take his “stupid Irishness” elsewhere.

The young man, initials E.L, attempted to fight multiple Airlie Beach pub patrons while out celebrating his 27th birthday in Queensland, Australia on Saturday, August 7, resulting in charges for public nuisance, failure to leave licensed premises and obstructing police.

Proserpine Magistrates Court heard it was about 1.10am when the Irish national became physically and verbally aggressive to fellow patrons of Paddy’s Shenanigans Irish Bar, with security called to remove him from the packed venue.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Emma Myors told the court the Irishman refused to leave, despite repeated warnings, and security officers had to physically restrain him while they waited for police to arrive.

When taken into custody, the 27-year-old refused to enter the attending police vehicle and an officer had to “physically pick him up and place him inside the vehicle”, Sergeant Myors said.

Throughout his interactions with police, he exhibited “extreme mood swings”, one moment apologising for his behaviour, the next attempting to fight, Sergeant Myors said.

Defence solicitor Elizabeth Smith told the court her client was a qualified carpenter who had been in Australia for two years on a working holiday visa, most recently living and working at Bowen.

Ms Smith said the Irishman was on a four-day break from work when he “tied one on” to the point he could not remember the events leading up to his arrest.

He accepted the allegations and pleaded guilty to all charges.

Magistrate James Morton told E.L he should have more “nous” about him at the age of 27.

He sentenced him to 50 hours of unpaid community service, fined him $450, and banned him from Paddy’s Bar for 12 months, saying: “Take your stupid Irishness and head to another Irish place”.

No convictions were recorded.
